Loops and Bridges is a project headed by Oddrun Eikli and Arne Hiorth. Oddrun Eikli sings, composes the melodies and writes the lyrics , Arne Hiorth does the arranging trumpet work and studio engineering. The music of Oddrun Eikli and Arne Hiorth in this their debut album escort you into their world of ambient jazz and Scandinavian roots in the realms of the cultural heritage of their homeland Norway. Gently relaxing, and soothing like an enchanting lullaby of love and self exploration, Oddrun sings from her soul the clearest gentle melodies woven into the carefully layered airy instrumentation by Arne, punctuated and guided by earthy echoing brass and adventurous spritely vintage keyboards, guitars and percussion that pulse like waves of the Nordic North wind in and out of keys like leaves swirling through Tolkeinesque caves whilst the flickering lights of the camp fire dance an inticing shadow on the stone walls. Overall the production is sensitively arranged and well considered, allowing the music to breathe a unique vitality. The songs are vulnerable and poetic from the haunting "Waltz for you" that could have come from a London West End show to the evocative and rhythmically dynamic intro of "Magic in Cape Town" that reminds me of a golden era of movies with visions of Monte Carlo and the Heart shaped bay of Paleokastritsa in Corfu. The fire of a life of wonder smoulders throughout the album, a comforting embracer from a fresh bracing Norwegian atmosphere whilst you are safe to lie back and wander the tracks of your own mind until the embers gently expire leaving one with a sense of calm and okayness that comes from letting go of all your worries for the best part of 40 well spent minutes over 9 sensibly bought tracks. Fans of Alpha, David Sylvian and Holgar Czukay will love this music as will appreciators of Flora Purim and Airto Moreira.
