I was walking down the road today and thought about you
together with me, walking besides me
I thought I heard your laugh, and looked at you
I saw you turn your head and look at me
as our lips touched I remember telling you I love you

@ 2009 Lorenzo Natali Prize @
Established in 1992 by the European Commission, the Lorenzo Natali Prize for journalism is awarded to journalists for outstanding reporting on Human Rights, Democracy and Development.
The 2009 Lorenzo Natali Prize Edition has, once again, elicited noted interest: more than 1,000 journalists from more than 133 countries participated.
1st Prize Winner: Richard MGAMBA (Tanzania)
Title of the article: The Battle for Souls (Albinos in Tanzania)
Name of media: The Guardian On Sunday
Country: Tanzania
Richard MGAMBA is a Tanzanian journalist currently based in Dar es Salaam , working for the Guardian Ltd. He started his journalism career in 1998 in Mwanza city on the southern shores of Lake Victoria. After covering stories about Tanzania's mining, fishing and cotton sectors, he continued with the killings of elderly women and arms smuggling in the Great Lakes region.
"The Battle for souls" is an inside story of how albinos currently live in fear as the rate of their killings continue to rock Tanzania, as well as the East African region. While last year the world was struggling to tame the impact of the global economic crisis, Tanzania has been the scene for atrocious crimes. Local traders planned and executed the killings of albinos to get a hold of their organs in order to boost their businesses.
I believe that the horrifying deterioration in the ethical conduct of people today stems from the mechanization and dehumanization of our lives... the disastrous by-product of the scientific and technical mentality. Nostra culpa. Man grows cold faster than the planet he inhabits.
~ Albert Einstein.

Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.”

Women for Women International

From Victim to Survivor... to Active Citizen
"War is not a computer-generated missile striking a digital map. War is the color of earth as it explodes in our faces, the sound of child pleading, the smell of smoke and fear. Women survivors of war are not the single image portrayed on the television screen, but the glue that holds families and countries together. Perhaps by understanding women, and the other side of war...we will have more humility in our discussions of wars...perhaps it is time to listen to women's side of history."
—Zainab Salbi, President and CEO of Women for Women International

Women for Women International mobilizes women to change their lives through a holistic approach that addresses the unique needs of women in conflict and post-conflict environments.
As women who go through our program assume leadership positions in their villages, actively participate in the reconstruction of their communities, build civil society, start businesses, train other women and serve as role models, they become active citizens who can help to establish lasting peace and stability.
While continuing to receive sponsorship support, women embark on the next leg of the journey and participate in the Renewing Women’s Life Skills (ReneWLS) Program that provides them with rights awareness, leadership education and vocational and technical skills training.
To help women transform their new skills into financial independence and sustainability, we offer job skills training to strengthen women’s existing skills and to introduce new skills in traditional and non-traditional fields so women can access future employment opportunities.
Building on the skills training program, we offer comprehensive business services designed to help women start and manage their own microenterprises.
What We Do

• Rights Awareness
• Job Skills Training

LIFE OF FEAR FOR TANZANIA'S ALBINOS
Persecution of albinism is based on the belief that certain body parts of albinistic people transmit magical powers. This superstition which is present in some parts of East Africa has been promulgated and exploited by witch doctors and others who use such body parts as ingredients in rituals, concoctions and potions with the claim that their magic will bring prosperity to the user. As a result people with albinism have been persecuted, killed and dismembered, and graves of albinistics dug up and desecrated. At the same time people with albinism have also been ostracized and even killed because they are presumed to bring bad luck.
"There are so called witch doctors who claim that they can do something with whatever body parts they get from Albinos," Simeon Mesaki, a veteran anthropologist who studies the phenomenon of witch craft, says.
The legs, hands and hair are the three body parts that are often taken after the killing. The legs of an albino are the most prized as they are believed to bring more wealth to miners, while hair attached to fishing nets is supposed to induce a good catch.

I grew up in the Virgin Islands and it doesn’t matter that I live in rainy Oregon… I’ll always be an Island Girl. I just have that island flavor running through my veins. I love the culture, the food, the traditions, the sense of community and all things Reggae, African and R&B.
I'm a Technical Recruiter; I love photography; I love music and I love to laugh!! I want to learn something new everyday. I want to live in the moment. I want to learn to be still. I'm learning to play pool, but my “teacher” keeps kicking my ass! I'm getting into gardening. I read to relax. I have quiet property out in the country with my horses and nothing is more relaxing after a stressful day than going home and playing with them. Music, humor & love - are essentials in my life. My children ARE my life!
I'm turned on by intelligent people with a great sense of humor & I'm a total sucker for beautiful eyes (and a nice butt). It may sound corny… but longs walks on the beach at night under the stars is what excites me. And sitting quietly amongst the tall fir trees behind my house - listening to the wind and the birds is what brings me peace.
** I am a work in progress and continually looking for ways to better myself and learn more about life. I've promised myself to travel somewhere amazing once a year.
>>> 2008 was home to the Virgin Islands.
>>> 2009 was to Africa.
>>> 2010, who knows!
I want to go home!

The Rift Valley Children’s Village (“Children’s Village”) is an orphanage located in Oldeani Village, Tanzania, which is adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in the Rift Valley. The Children’s Village provides a home, family and community for orphaned and vulnerable children. We prepare them to become informed, resourceful and responsible citizens in their community and Tanzania. As of June 2009, the Children's Village is now a home to 69 orphaned and abandoned children.
Mountain gorillas, a species with only 720 remaining members. These peaceful creatures are excellent mothers, protective fathers, and playful toddlers and they share 98.6% of their genetic makeup with humans – this is a startling reminder of our own humanity.
Since its establishment by Dian Fossey in late 1967, high inside Volcanoes National Park, the Karisoke Research Center has been the centerpiece for mountain gorilla research and conservation in Rwanda and in the larger Virunga region. Now, nearly four decades later, the Karisoke Research Center has produced an unequaled amount of data about mountain gorillas and their habitat.
