Mike Neff makes a stranger smile
In a town like Denver, you should never underestimate the power of serendipity. On more than one occasion, I’ve been out wandering the city, on my way to something or other and have ended up stumbling on a remarkable musical experience.
Such was the case last Friday night. All I was trying to do was meet up with a local singer-songwriter to get a copy of his new CD. After multiple texts and phone tags, we finally agreed to meet up at the Old Curtis Street Bar, a place I love, but haven’t visited in a long time. Since John Baxter fled town for warmer climes, Joe Ramirez has added booking to his usual sound engineering duties at the Old Curtis, and he’s been doing a great job, lining up some truly interesting and entertaining bills.
When I arrived – admittedly late and having missed Bad Weather California and Jen Korte – singer-songwriter Mike Neff was just taking the stage with his project, Los Dos and the New American Ramblers. I’ve heard of Neff, of course, but had never had the good fortune of catching him live. I’ve been meaning to, but haven’t gone out of my way to make it happen. As I’ve often admitted, I’m a sucker for a flashy performance and a truly original sound, and Mr. Neff brought neither of those things with his sincere take on Americana. However, with special help from Andy Wild on bass, the charismatic performer absolutely captivated me – as well as the rest of the well-lubricated crowd – with his honest songwriting, earnest emoting and beautifully tarnished vocals. Quoting Flatlander Butch Hancock, Neff’s MySpace page says he just wants to see some smiling faces on his friends. That night, he got some smiles out of complete strangers like me as well.

Some musicians wear earnestness like a badge, and it becomes as much a pose as anything KISS has ever done. But, LOS DOS AND THE NEW AMERICAN RAMBLERS are the genuine article, with no need for airs, and that quality has meant that the act has flown largely under the radar since its inception in 2003. Songwriters Mike Neff and Charles von Rosenberg clearly draw inspiration from any legendary folk artist you could name, and, superficially, they may remind you of any generic Americana band that comes to mind. What's far from generic though, is the fact that this duo's deceptively simple music, steeped in the patois of traditional blues, seems as refreshingly original as that of its forbears. On stage, LOS DOS deliver a lively show that's generous with passion and conviction. - 1/24/09 WESTWORD Critic's Choice (Tom Murphy)
Started in 2003, Los Dos is the collection of songs written by Mike Neff and Charles von Rosenberg. Folk/Blues style music, with overtones of any style of music you please. We enjoy mixing it up. I think our favorite situation would be playing songs all night for friends and strangers (who might be your best freind that you never met (thanks Brownie)) The New American Ramblers is the loose collection of people we play with, it seems to be growing day by day, but the instrumentation is widely varied and the goal is to have a travelling group of people ready to ramble around with us where our music may take us, so there ya go....... enjoy
HELP RAMBLERS!! I TOTALLY DELETED FAST HEART MART'S MYSPACE PAGE WITH 80,000 PLAYS!!! LAME! PLEASE PLAY SOME SONGS (THERE ARE SEVERAL BRAND NEW ONES UP) AND A NEW VIDEO FOR "MAYAN PROPHECY"! TELL EVERYONE TO COME AND ADD HIM!! THNX 4 SAVING MY ASS... xx Roblyn
Hey Los Dos, I've got a radio show for a few weeks - so, please tune into the Paul Hughes Show (filling in for Gordon Hotchkiss) on Celtic Music Radio this Wednesday between 7pm – 9pm UK time. As well a Scottish, Irish and American folk/roots music I’ll be chatting with Paddy Callaghan about being selected for the finals of the BBC Young Trad Musician of the Year and hear him playing the harp and box. Celtic Music Radio is available in and around Glasgow on 1530 AM (MW) and you can listen anywhere else in the world on the internet at www.celticmusicradio.net and click on “Listen Live” in the top right of the screen. Thanks for reading down this far.
So, I'm not sure how to get in touch with you all other than here...but I was curious if any of you or a few of you or (whatever would work) would maybe want to do a show at Paris on the Platte Wine Bar on Saturday night, like this Sat. August 8th. Our scheduled people canceled and I'd been thinking of asking if you guys would want to play there at some point, anyway. If it's doable for you guys, send me an e-mail through here or a comment or whatever. It's a 25.00 bar tab and 10% of the night's sales for the gig, so lemme know if you can or if you get this within the next few days. Oh, and if not this Saturday, would you be interested in another date, maybe? Thanks.
On
June sixth, twenty Denver musical acts swap songs at the all night
auditory orgy called Denver Does Denver. Played on three stages between Bar Bar
and Old Curtis St, these two neighboring venues serve as the sets for
promiscuity in sound. Each band abandons their original material to
play a set covering another Denver band. The expansive lineup includes
a wide assortment of Denver's most adventurous artists, from singer
songwriters to electronic composers, hip hop crews to blues crooners,
improvisational avante gardists to old time country troops. Witness a massive intersection of local on local sound at Denver
Does Denver.

Had a feeling you might Know William E. Whitmore, its up your alley. Also, have a proposal for you guys, would you at all be willing to do a free show at the Farmer's Market on a Saturday in the summer? The Highlands (H.U.N.I) are starting one right across from LOLA (not affiliated with LOLA) and they are looking for performers. It'd be one Saturday unless you may want to commit to more, they have no budget so it'd be for free. That stinks, i know, but thought I'd mention it. Drop me a line if you think you might want to do it...no pressure or guilt. See you soon,me hopes.
Playing the Cd you guys gave me way back in Paris Wine Bar right now, people like it...Yay! What's this UCD show about and any plans for any more shows coming up. Also wanted to let you guys know a guy named William Elliot Whitmore is playing at the Larimer Lounge on the 26th of April. I think you guys would like him, check it out if you get a chance, he has a myspace too.
