Influences the sound of late night trains / desert drives / the rain / the drumming of robert ealey / the vibe of the red jacket in dallas, the king king in hollywood, and the pennsylvania pub in cowtown / the midnight cowboy (bill mack) over-night trucking show circa 1990's on wbap 820 am / paul's remembrance of his dad at the kitchen table taking apart, digging into and testing with his oscilloscope, old short wave radios and other assorted super cool retro electronic gear / the wonderful spirit that permeates two of of cowtown's best haunts: benito's and fred's / the many long late night conversations paul had with two of his best friends, george rieff and johnny reno, while driving across the blackness of the american night in places like far western nebraska and such / long, late night dinners on a bitterly cold winter night in some northern city with good friends and good wine / the things learned about rhythm, form, and movement from the beautiful and amazingly talented girls of the fort worth dallas ballet circa 1990's / laying in bed at night as a kid and hearing the sound, brought in on a north wind, of semi-truck tires out on loop 820 on the far west edge of fort worth and wondering where the hell those late night travelers were headed  ..... mostly west

Paul here ....

The last few years that I played in Johnny Reno's band Johnny and I started talking about doing some interesting side projects. Most of these centered around some sort of version of a combination of programmed electronic music and live musicians, maybe with a DJ thrown into the mix. I had already programmed all the drum, bass, and synth sounds for the original score to Robert Rodriguez's film "Roadracers"  and was listening to lot of the European DJ stuff ... particularly the Paris Lounge and Hotel Costes sets but also some American stuff .... Thievery Corporation etc. Johnny had been listening a lot to St. Germain and Air. Both of us were hugely into the music from Orson Well's classic film "A Touch of Evil". I had also taken to the sounds of Carlos Gardell, the Argentine tango maestro, as well as the phenomenal sounds of Los Panchos, Astor Piazzola and the Italian crooner Carlo Buti. I was also way into hard bop stuff like the crazy "Hora Decubitus" by Charlie Mingus but also the west coast cool of Chet Baker.

The thing that was going to make us different though was that we had both learned deeply how to play the hard blues. We had both learned it and played it with a lot of those old guys both in Fort Worth and on the road. I mean it's one thing for someone like Moby to drop a sample of John Lee Hooker into a one of his electronically bland pieces but it would be another for guys who could actually play that stuff as if they were out on Jacksboro Hwy in the mid 1940's to a backdrop that might have programmed interpretations of Robert Ealey's drumming .... the kind he played when he played drums with Lightning Hopkins combined with crazy bongo and trumpet hits ala Mancini. We didn't want to sound like Combustible Edison or Stereo Lab or The Januarys or anybody else really. We wanted to sound like old Jacksboro Hwy / Southside Chicago blues veteran's that were hip to and could play hard jazz but who could also program synths and were at ease with computer based sequencers. We thought it would be unique because we knew the blues guys can't play jazz and know nothing about technology and that the jazz guys can't play blues and that they also know nothing about technology. Somehow we had escaped those biases that hang up way too many musicians.

But alas Johnny never found the time to devote to it and it never came together.

One day about a year and a half ago I was teaching and a girl walks in and says she is interested in taking guitar lessons but that she is also a singer and is looking for people to perform with. And so Angie Cassada started taking lessons and one day I played some bossas and jazz standards and asked her to sing some for me. I did this because I was writing a song for a film and needed a female voice to sing the girl in the song's point of view. She sounded great and so I asked her to sing on the demo. Everyone who heard it really liked her voice including the author of the book that the movie was based on.

So one night we went down to La Madeleine and I told her all about mine and Johnny's ideas and that I thought her and I should try to put the project together. She was way into it and we've been working on the ideas slowly ever since.

It's coming together pretty well. .. ..

Knightriders is Available for Pre-orders - Just to make it clear: This is Knightriders, not Knight Rider, the TV show with David Hasselhoff and the talking car. This is Donald Rubinstein's seminal score to George A. Romero's jousting biker flick that has been in demand ever since the film came out 27 years ago.

As a special treat, Donald has signed the first 100 covers. As usual, please limit 2 signed CDs per customer.

I really had an awesome time at the Kimbell Saturday night. I felt kind of spoiled having some groovy tunes play as I eyed the art, it was nice. Oh, and the Cousteau cover took me by surprise...well done guys! You have a new fan.
