Joe Ransom is an aspiring young musician from Melbourne, Australia – an individual who seems to have that uncanny gift of integral songwriting which is simply a reflection upon the way in which he sees/hears the world.
Inspired by Australia’s reputable indie/rock songwriters of the 1990’s and 2000’s, (names such as Tim Rogers, Jamie Hutchings, Paul Dempsey, Toby Martin, Kevin Mitchell, Marty Donald, can be readily found in the liner notes of his CD collection) Joe is showing a youthful potential to follow their shiny footsteps into the next decade. At very least he has made a commendable start and his shoes are only a little bit scuffed.
“Certainly ‘potential’ is a fitting word to describe. The songs are good, and getting better. The instrumentation is good, and getting better. The themes are good, and continuous..."
Buzz Magazine November 2007
Off his own accord, a series of 4 Lost Note Foundation CD’s were recorded and released between 2006-2009, alongside regular band and solo shows played across Australia and solo tours to the U.K and New York.
The most recent album “It’s a bit far away…” was derived from recording sessions on opposite sides of the world – in Melbourne and Edinburgh – binding a conceptual title and theme with an intuitive meaning – typical to the way in which Joe approaches his music as an evocative form of art.
“This is one album that is a pure joy to listen to. From the beautiful sound of ‘Escape’ to the brilliantly written ‘Imagination Notebook’ or the acoustic gem, ‘She Is A Pilgrim’ (that will evoke emotions inside you that you didn’t even know existed), these are all tracks that you could listen to a million times and still not grow tired of.” SubcultureEntertainment.com 2009
Step, step.
A new recording took place during the Winter of 2009: This time a 5 track EP entitled ‘5 POSTCARDS’, produced and recorded by Joe himself using borrowed recording equipment set up in a remote farmhouse in rural Victoria.
It was then mixed by Quinn McHugh in Brisbane.
The new recording brings forth a newly found confidence and aspiration for sharing his music with the world.
In his own words, this is what Joe has to say about his music career at present:
"I feel as though each Lost Note Foundation CD has been a stepping stone, leading me from an inexperienced and ambitious musical level to a more experienced, focused and professional level. I was learning about how songwriting works for me in my life and how it can relate to others lives. I now feel 90% ready for the next step, and that is pretty confident considering I’m still more or less treading on thin ice…
It was only recently that someone told me something which really clicked within and I started to really believe that I do have something important to share with the world as a songwriter. Prior to that, I was questioning why I was doing all this and whether or not it was actually beneficial to anyone including myself. That hesitance and uncertainty sometimes comes across in the lyrics of my older songs. It’s easy to feel as though you are a mere solitary insignificant grain, on a 90 mile beach of sand, stone, shells, and pebbles. And often you are.
But every grain of sand makes up a part of the beach….. and anyway….. what if you’re more than a mere grain of sand? What if you are a beautifully unique shell… or an exquisite lobster claw.. or maybe even a marvelous shark-fin seen by a pirate protruding out of the water? (Poetic licence intended)
This doesn’t just apply to music, but to everything. You’ve got to follow your own path and find your true place in the world. The world needs different types of people for different purposes. It needs nurses, it needs bakers, it needs candlestick-makers. It needs you.
5 Postcards – is my new CD! It’s 5 songs – each of which refers to a place I visited in 2006 (so it’s a bit of a travel flash back) and it’s like an ‘audible postcard’… but not in a clichéd way. I’m very happy with the sounds. I’m not going to try to describe them.. Please go forth and listen… it’s cheaper than a holiday… !
5 Postcards is/are to be released at some point in 2010….. so keep checking your mail ;)”
