I grew up playing classical music only, but in recent years, I've been inspired to branch out...by "Maraca," Steve Kujala, Hubert Laws, Dave Valentine, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Marco Granados, Michel Camilo, Nestor Torres, Pat Metheny, Chick Corea, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Keith Jarrett, Brad Mehldau, Jobim, Stan Getz, Peter Sprague, Holly Hofmann, Kenny Werner, and several amazing mentors whose names you wouldn't recognize but who have had a huge impact on my life....very new influences include Chico Pinheiro, Edu Ribeiro, Milton Nascimento, Moacir Santos, etc...
Louisa West was born in Thomasville, Georgia in 1979 and began playing flute in middle school band class at the age of ten. Before long, she had developed a passion for music and began attending several honor band/orchestra clinics and summer music workshops every year throughout middle and high school.
Louisa holds a Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Georgia. While studying there, she performed in numerous ensembles, including an orchestra conducted by the legendary Sammy Nestico. She studied privately with highly acclaimed classical flutists, including Angela Jones-Reus (former prinicipal flutist of the Stuttgart Philmarmonic), William Bennett, Mary Karen Clardy, and Mimi Stillman, as well as jazz flutists Nestor Torres and Holly Hofmann.
She has been a winner of a number of competitions, including the Florida Flute Association Young Artist Competition in 1999 and the 2009 National Flute Association Jazz Master Class Competition with Lew Tabachin.
After graduating from college in 2001, she relocated to southern California where she has been performing in a wide variety of musical situations, including world music, jazz, latin jazz, and classical musicians. She has performed extensively in the U.S as well as Canada and Mexico. She has also appeared onstage with touring acts such as Persian pop star Shakila, flutist Nestor Torres, and brazilian singer Diogo Nogueira.
Louisa recently attended California Brazil Camp, where she had the opportunity to attend workshops and performances by great brazilian jazz artists, including drummer Edu Ribeiro, guitarist Chico Pinheiro, Marcos Silva, and dozens of other masters of brazilian music. This experience, along with being introduced to great historical brazilian jazz recordings by artists such as Moacir Santos and Milton Nascimento, proved to be a major source of inspiration in her musical life.
She is now living in San Diego, CA, where she continues to study jazz flute with renowned jazz flutist Holly Hofmann. She is currently preparing to record her debut CD with stellar southern California artists, including Peter Sprague, Mike Wofford, and Russell Bizzett, among others.
Oi Louisa tudo bem. Eu espero que você tenha um 2010 maravilhoso com muita música também. O Vera Cruz e o Angelus estão soando muito bem. Eu estou honrado de saber que vocês vão tocar "Cebola no Frevo". Quero ouvir uma gravação sim ? Hope see you soon. My best for you and yours too' Edu
After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace... Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY
As gospellers have said, Beneath signalling skies, On land dusty to tread, A trough in a stable Was the strawy first-bed Of a divine baby - The forgiving Godhead.
A season for new hope - There then and here now; The yuletide of goodwill - There then and here now.
In respect of this chance, Beneath bright or dark skies, Faith's the star that we glance Attending Christ's churches And trying to enhance, With singing and ritual, Our God-loving stance.
Hi, Louisa! What a beautiful flut!! Thanks indeed for your virtual friendship. On Christmas, I sincerely wish you love, peace, harmony, much music of course, a unity of your family, faith (whatever means this for you…In my case, I trust in Jesus, my God, and I’m celebrating his birthday).
