The story of Louis
His name is Louis and he lives a couple of streets away from here. He is not yet seven and already he has been through much. They say he is a bit strange. Many people find his mood swings hard to understand, whereas others can see something in him. Sometimes 'Loetje' is a bit hot-tempered. When people do not want to listen to his stories, he tries to shout them. His thoughts are young, fresh and full of fantasies. When he sits down, gazing quietly, you can hear exactly what is in him. That is if you listen very carefully. Not so long ago a few specialists tried to make Louis a bit more approachable. This did not really work out well, as he wants to be left alone and grow on his own.
His phantasms appear when you let him play. He will speak more loudly and various short stories will express the way he feels. His shirt says Zawsze kurwa drugi. You should ask him the meaning of this some time.
Comments:
Question marks appear with titles (and lyrics) such as 'I ate Billy', 'Planet E' (climax) and '5'. They make this tape a fine visiting card for a new band that will map out the rural village Boxmeer in their own way one day. Popcollectief Den Bosch '98
I still have trouble getting the CD out of my player, because this is popmusic after my own heart. A lot of intelligent songs, a pleasant little organ and smart summery songs that sometimes tend to become more autumnal. It reminds me of bands such as The Notwist, The Sea and Cake, Coldplay and Merry Pierce. Not the least names I should say. Again a must! Vera Groningen '01
DEMO OF THE MONTH
Living Room Records is rather pig-headed in the periphery of the corrupt music industry and this was again confirmed with the compilation album Hometaping Is Illegal. One of the striking songs on that album is Blend from LOUIS (www.musicbylouis.com). The song is from a demo with four tracks and contains a more adult sound from the four boys from Boxmeer. Previous demos were searches for an individual sound. Live the band even sounded a bit grungy a few years ago. This is not the most interesting aspect of their music. Since the modest use of electronics, their sound has sharpened. This modesty is a strong trump. Louis is above all a guitar band, too much of electronic tricks could outshine their songwriting talent. They have chosen for thin synthesiser lines, which serve only as an accentuation. This gives songs such as Blend and Happy an extra melancholic feeling. The chords and song play a kind of cat-and-mouse game, which makes you think of the German band The Notwist. On their phenomenal album Shrink this band also coloured their songs electronically so as to escape from the predictable rock idiom. Louis seems to be capable of producing a classic rock album in advance within a few years.
