2009 Louisville Photo Biennial's Blurbs |
About me:
The 2009 Louisville Photo Biennial is taking place between June 1 and July 31. Thirty-seven galleries and the Speed Museum participated in the 2007 Biennial and attracted the View Camera Magazine: Large Format Conference. We endeavor to build on that success, and by getting a head start, make the fifth Biennial, 2009, even greater. We invite you to participate by celebrating the 2009 Biennial’s theme: The Center for Photographic Studies. This is an opportunity to draw attention not just to the subject of photography, but to your gallery and the Louisville visual arts.
THE CENTER FOR PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIES
The Center for Photographic Studies was a Louisville alternative school for creative photography founded by C.J. Pressma in 1970. During its eight-year existence, the Center attracted students from over 35 states and foreign countries to its full-time resident program and provided instruction and darkroom access for hundreds of students in the Louisville area. The Center first opened at the Galt House at 131 W. Main St. and later relocated to 722 W. Main St. Its two galleries provided monthly photographic exhibits showcasing works of local, regional and internationally acclaimed photographers including Ansel Adams and Minor White. The Center’s lecture series included Bruce Davidson, Emett Gowin, Judy Dater, Henry Holmes Smith and many others.
BEING PART OF SOMETHING BIGGER
There will be enough good work and historical importance to the Photo Biennial that we plan to distill those multiple shows into one larger show to travel to museums. We also believe the documentation we gather from the artists and create ourselves will support the publication of a catalog for the Biennial and the resulting museum show. This would be available for sale through all the galleries for the Biennial and would accompany the travelling exhibit.
