Loukoum (French for Turkish Delights) is a musical collaboration between composer/accordionist Kate Dunphy and violinist/cellist Danielle Turano. Kate and Danielle originally met at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT in 2003 where Kate was studying music composition and Danielle was studying classical violin performance. They found they shared a passion for music of other cultures and started to build a unique and eclectic repertoire of both traditional songs and original compositions. While pursuing her degree, Kate journeyed to Cork, Ireland where she immersed herself in the study of traditional Irish music. Danielle broadened her Western classical focus with frequent trips to New York city where she studied Egyptian repertoire. Kate and Danielle have performed in many ensembles ranging in genre from flamenco, French gypsy jazz, Arabic, Irish, Turkish, folk, rock, gypsy punk, metal, and Japanese gypsy rock All of these musical experiences have helped to develop their diverse repertoire and unique sound as a performing duo. Their malleable instrumentation of accordion and violin/cello combined with their high niveau of musicality and style are capable of recalling the sweet sounds of a string quartet, or a French cafe band one minute, and rousing the listener with a set of Irish reels the next. Loukoum brings an elegant, refined and festive atmosphere to any event. Loukoum is available for corporate events, weddings, art openings, wine tastings, cocktail parties, and gala events.
