While Lovebird has been performing live shows since July of 2009, the band's history delves much deeper. The group is actually the reified vision of Nicole Eva Emery and Mike Gleeson, who have been playing and writing music together, on and off, for the last eight years. Gleeson had previously played drums for Michael Runion & The Royal Family and the Ventura-based punk band Glass and Ashes (No Idea Records) and has extensively toured both the U.S. and Europe. Emery has sung alongside Bob Dylan and Rickie Lee Jones, is a member of Leslie & The Badgers and Jesca Hoop's band, and has toured and performed at festivals including South by Southwest, Newport Folk Festival, and The Great Escape in Brighton, UK... .. After having written a collection of songs, the pair started a serious recording project in the summer of 2008. Along with the help of drummer Brian Granillo (member of Franklin For Short), they recorded their self-titled album at Satellite Studios with engineer Armand John Anthony in Ventura, CA. With the completion of the record, Emery and Gleeson recruited full-time band members Ashley Heatherly, Chris Jones, and Josh Hayes (also a member of Glass and Ashes) in the spring of 2009 and have been playing shows ever since their inclusion. To date, they have opened for acts including Azure Ray and Tim Kasher... .. Although Lovebird's sound is most readily classified as indie-rock/pop/alternative, Lovebird's influences carry a wide range, from classic R&B/soul to hard rock/punk and world music, lending to the multi-faceted array of their songs. Emery's musical education singing old-time jazz and Balkan choir music, as well as fingerpicking delta blues, Celtic and Appalachian ballads, coupled with Gleeson's formal drum training, strong punk roots, and the influence of 60's soul, has produced a genre-bending sound that is consistently original... .. The band's set can deliver plenty of driving, garage-spawned pop with heavy melodies and harmonizing female vocals, and suddenly turn into an intensely heavy and sometimes dark pattern. The non-standard use of a baritone guitar and complimenting keyboard ambiance lends an underlying deep tonality and maturity that is unique in mid-tempo, hook-laden rock. The onstage exchange of musical duties contributes to a dynamic live show and showcases each member's diverse skill set. Lovebird's eponymous album, released by Blackbird Records in the fall of 2009, is described by the VC Reporter as "an absorbing arrangement of songs that mingles brooding shoegaze rock with indie-pop of a personal nature.".. .. ......
