| About Love Or Perish! |
State violence has been delegitimized, not because it is used less frequently or that the state has more of a fear to use violence against its citizens, terrorists, or foreign armies, but rather that it has blurred the line on how and why it is used. Indeed, the state now acts with impunity, and what was once state action through wars and military engagements, now begins to look like a police-military combination. What this means is that the police now act and behave more like an organized military (rather than a police force made to enforce local laws) and the military increasingly engages in international police work (this means that military acts as a police force does, busting up regimes and making sting operations on a massive scale).
In the end, what this means is that the plain old citizenry itself is at once made into a military and police target. Who do you fight against when the weapons of war are laser-like in precision but then used as blunt fighting tools? Who do you choose to pick your battle when you want healthcare and the police are dressed as if you are planning to invade the public square?
State violence is in and of itself, violence that legitimizes authority. When that violence has become indefinable, inexorably complicated, does it not mean then also the public discourse suffers? The public discourse has been summarily arrested, detained, and executed behind the veil of martial law and public safety. We can't answer that, but hopefully we'll make you think of the question.
