Love Poetry Hate Racism brought to you by diVERSE: poets against racism
Celebrating Diversity through the Spoken Word across the Spoken World
April 17th, 18th and 19th 2009

Love Poetry Hate Racism is an event that exists to promote cultural diversity and harmony through poetry and spoken word. Each year we ask poets across the world (YOU!) to put themselves forward to volunteer to hold events on one weekend in April. If you would like to be involved please let us know what kind of an event you’d like to hold, where you will hold it and send us your publicity material and we will list those details on this page. Please check our blog for FAQs

We are now getting ready for LPHR 2009! Can you believe it's the third year running already? If you'd like to be involved please message us. Events take place all over the world and if there isn't an event organiser close to you why not do it yourself? Information on how to get invloved is in our blog posts.

In Belfast over the past few years there has been a substantial rise in racist attacks on our growing ethnic minority population. We know, through travelling, that ours is not the only city where the scourge of racism has risen sharply over the last few years, whether against Aboriginal people and ethnic minorities (particularly Muslims) in Australia, or the abuse suffered by people from Africa or Eastern Europe in Ireland.

We have always made it a point in our performances and in our promotional material, that we are opposed to discrimination against anyone on the basis of their ethnic origins, the colour of their skin or the religion they choose to adhere to.

We are putting out this call to make international the cry from writers and poets that we must combat racism and celebrate diversity. Following from a hugely successful international connection in 2007 in which fifty events took place in four continents we are now preparing for the 2009 event which will take place on the weekend of Friday April 17th to Sunday April 19th 2009. We understand scheduling can be difficult and any events you would like to host in the two weeks around this time can be included in our calendar of events.

If you would like to be part of this global celebration of diversity we need you to be able to get a group of people together to put on a poetry reading, slam contest, open mic night or whatever form you most prefer and let us know about it.

This poem was nominated by UN as the best poem of 2008, Written by an African Kid:

When I born, I black
When I grow up, I black
When I go in Sun, I black
When I scared, I black
When I sick, I black
And when I die, I still black

And you white fellow
When you born, you pink
When you grow up, you white
When you go in sun, you red
When you cold, you blue
When you scared, you yellow
When you sick, you green
And when you die, you gray

And you calling me colored?

We've now had 5 years of lies about 9/11, WMD's, and freedom. The real reasons were oil, profiteering, and fascism. Not just Bush, but the news media, most of congress, and all who remain silent. And now they'll use fear to quash dissent. It's nothing new -- it's been going on for ages. War, poverty, ecocide, arrogant bullying --they're all from greed and fear, which come from ignorance. ♥ But it's not too late -- we can still learn to make peace. Talk with people. Love, Eric

Committing Poetry in Times of War

Committing Poetry in Times of War

Greetings Love Poetry Hate Racism!

We're the Distribution Team for the documentary, "Committing Poetry in Times of War." As you know from our myspace page, the film documents the case of slam poetry teachers who lost their jobs due to their refusal to compromise on freedom of speech and censor their students' anti-war poetry.

We've just printed postcards advertising the DVD for sale & we're asking Slam Masters if they are interested in announcing the DVD at their Slams and telling people about the movement to Commit Poetry! We mail you out a stack of Postcards that tell about the film & any sales you refer to us, we'll write you a check for 20%.

Please let us know if you're interested and we'll put a package together & ship it to you! Get people fired up at your slams and make a little extra for yourself and your organization!

Thanks for your amazing energy & dedication to Poetry, Community, and
Freedom of Speech!

Stop by our Myspace page and send us an email to get all the details!

Peace,

The Committing Poetry Team
