RECENT MEDIA COVERAGE
"The Cartels sound and energy was really a total contrast to Friends of Heroes. The track 'White Room' breathed life into their set and was the most memorable song, oozing potential with its catchy guitar sound. Another good track which encouraged some of the increasing crowd to dance and sing was the very learnable 'We All Sing Together'.
Gail Buckthorpe @ Sandman Magazine
"Next up was The Cartels (who seem to be very busy at the moment on the Sheffield music scene!) but again not all the band members were available tonight – so another Smaller Cartels set was played out to the awaiting crowd – but even with the recent/temporary band shrinkage, their set is still very listenable and enjoyable. The clear/strong vocal from DT on ‘Where I Stand’ was just so astounding it impressed everyone in the room, and I think it came as bit of a surprise to some too – their sound instantly directed all the attention to the stage. I felt their best lyrics came from their next song ‘Heart of Gold’, which makes you wonder where they get their inspiration from…pretty girls/rainbows maybe? Their ‘Sing Together’ song which was so catchy and easy to sing along to (hence the name I suppose!), managed to scoop the biggest applause of the night. This band seems to have a good blend…like a decent cocktail - Bob Dylan with a hint of Jam, topped with a spurt of Oasis….good set!"

"First on swagger the depleted “Cartel’s”, two members down after an on-the-eve walkout by their lead singer and a drummer at home awaiting the birth of his child. But the remaining members, vocalist DT and bassist Darren proved the glass was still half full, treating the crowd to a scaled back acoustic set. This may have been a wise move on their part, the lack of amps and overblown riffs perfectly showcased a brace of extremely well crafted tunes. ‘Heart of Gold’ stands out, reminiscent of the La’s tight, crunchy riffs and stand alone lyrics but with a touch of Ian Browns northern swagger thrown in for good measure."

"We got in the packed out to the rafters Frog and Parrot just in time for The Cartels, it was manic in there, I haven't seen the Frog and Parrot so busy in years! The Cartels started their set with a good guitar riff which impressed the on looking crowd so much they received a good round of applause instantly, the music was very listenable and very catchy, so catchy I found myself singing along without even knowing it. Looking around you could see everybody nodding away to the solid drum beat and bass. Their song "Shout It Out" for me was their most memorable track, what with the excellent drum and bass start and hair curling riffs, this song was obviously a winner, and the applause and cheers which followed proved that!"

"The Cartels aren't the only local band to be influenced by Oasis/Verve etc, but they're possibly the best. They played with supreme confidence, but without it spilling over into arrogance. The sound was perfect as each instrument linked together to form a tight whole with excellent guitar riffs being particularly memorable. Last song 'Rise Up' allowed the band to let rip and crank it up, but without losing their cohesion."

"The Cartels are about the most exciting band I have heard in some years, the band have got fresh sounds, old school but their own, that's unlike most of the stuff that's come out in Sheffield in the past five years or so. The song catalogue of The Cartels shows in a bright light how adaptable their music is to different audiences. Keep your ears open for this outfit"
Anne Marie O'donnell - Freelance Journalist
"The Cartels are a relatively new band but have received a lot of coverage around Sheffield and the South Yorkshire area since their formation early last year. "Shout It Out", a nod back to the 90's and Stone Roses. An upbeat tempo accompanied by quite an often ghostly voice is what makes this track stand out. It will be interesting to see which direction the band head in the future."
Chris @ "Indiscreet.com"
"The Cartels to me they have a bit of The Verve to them, maybe a bit of Inspiral Carpets with them also citing Bob Dylan and Ocean Colour Scene as influences. Their song 'Heart of Gold' reminds me of Del Amitri's fabulous Nothing Ever Happens, not a bad track to be compared to."
John Lamb @ "What's wrong with the mainstream"
The Cartels are a four piece band hailing from Sheffield.
After meeting on the eve of 2008 DT our singer and Oliver
the drummer set about putting together some like minded
members to complete the line up, Jonny seemed like an
obvious choice even if his taste in 60's bands wasn't enough
his guitar skills hit the grade followed a little later with
Darren on bass, bringing some grooves with him.
Thier musical style hails from influences such as John
Lennon, Richard Ashcroft, Noel Gallagher, Eric clapton,
Bob Dylan, Simon Fowler, Paul Weller and John Squire.
We've been overwhelmed by the response and the gigs are
going from strength to strength, setting a good firm step on
the ladder playing The Plug for the first gig, followed by
another couple of gigs leading to a support slot with The
Clone Roses at The O2 Academy and more resent having
the opportunity to play the official Oasis aftershow party
at Proud, Camden.
Keep an eye on our future movements either here or
on our Facebook fanpage
we hope you enjoy the tunes on here and feel free
to drop a comment.
