lowell pelkey's Interests
|
| General | music (playing / writing / recording / listening), books (mostly sci-fi and fantasy), magazines (Atlantic, Smithsonian, Nat'l Geographic, Sci-Am, Maxim, etc.), movies (bring on the summer blockbusters!), hangin' out with the best kid on the planet. playin' cards, especially poker but really any game. chess. games of strategy and skill RULE over games of chance, but when you combine the two, it's sometimes even more fun. love playin' basketball and racquetball (though i don't do enough of either). pretty much anything athletic is good. hiking is great. love the ocean. love to cook when i have the time; it's hard to find something wrong with havin' good food.
i've spent most of my working life in shops, worked with damn near every kind of tool known to man, and i love building things. i can make pretty much anything out of whatever's called for with pretty much whatever's available. 'only a poor workman blames his tools' and all that.
i've spent a lot of time running CNC machines, like waterjet cutters, torches, mills, lathes, etc. love woodworking, and would absolutely LOVE having enough decent tools to set up shop at home, build some furniture, some guitars, do some remodeling. everything takes money....and i never seem to have enough to do the things i really want to, so i s'pose i keep workin' on that...
and computers, of course. i think i'd die without the internet. for me having an internet connection is like being at the library constantly: you can find out about anything, with a little digging. there's a lot to be said for having more to read/watch/listen to than you can possibly take advantage of. vive la information overload! pick your battles, people.
i know enough about coding to throw together a decent page, though i find i like the simpler things- clean layouts, easy navigation, quality of content- better than throwing in everything you could possibly include. i have a litte web site that's always growing. myspace is just interesting enough to put up a page- this one- but it's likely just gonna get parked here; the other's more than enough work to keep me busy.
and i really like video games, but i never seem to have the time for 'em anymore....which kinda sucks. at least when i'm old and unable to do much else, the video games will be insanely amazing. | | Music |

About me:
if you really wanna know something about me, click here to check out my actual website.
if you wanna hear some of my music, you could check out my MySpace 'band' page. there are 3 tunes streamed on it.
or you could click here to check out or actually download any tunes i've posted online (from soundclick.com, a site that keeps track of usage stats for me). it's the main site i distribute music online through.
or you could click here, to get an earful of some of my stuff at unsignedbandweb.com.
or here, from betarecords.com, another mirror site i threw some tunes on.
or even here, from isound.com, another mirror site.
if you check out any of those links, let me encourage taking a good look around the sites. there are a TON of good unsigned bands.
but back to this "about me" thing. in what (for me) is a brief manner:
most people would say i'm a pretty decent guy, i try to be khoul, not sweat the small stuff, give people the benefit of the doubt, treat people like i want to be treated. i love music and books and films. hang out with my dog Chowder, mostly, and my son- the greatest 15 year old on the planet- whenever possible. i come from a great family, and got taught good things like "be honest" and "work hard"...the usual. i'm prob'ly as attractive as the average guy, and as intelligent. i have a decent- if slightly offbeat- sense of humor, and i lean a little toward perfectionism; another way of saying i'm always looking for things to be a little better than they are...which means, basically, i'm destined to live out my life frustrated with my current lot to some extent.
i play guitar and write music (neither as much as i used to, or would if i had more @#($*@!* time!). used to be a longhaired party-hound type back in the day, but being a divorced dad changes things 'fore ya know it.
i try to keep an open mind about most things, but i have to admit i'm pretty set in the compelling, if inconvenient, belief that there is no 'god'. still, if the random convergence of known and unknown subatomic particles, and the measured and unseen energies of the universe, can, in their unfathomably complex machinations, combine in practically infinite ways, randomly amounting to a cohesive structure that is 'me', and, as a preponderance of the evidence would seem to suggest, this structure has both life and consciousness, as well as that what i am is actually the sum total or embodiment of those properties, i see no reason to completely rule out the possibility that when this biological system i govern has run its course then, in the fullness of infinite time, another random convergence may statistically occur which results in the expression of another consciousness that 'is me'...or is at least as much 'me' as this 'me' is.
which is all a way of saying that i see no need for, nor evidence of, nor cause to believe in any 'intelligent design' or 'higher power' to explain the origin or nature of the universe. indeed, any such so-called answer to that mystery only supplants it with the same mystery rephrased; to wit: "what is the origin or nature of this 'higher power', this 'intelligent designer'?". but having said all that, my belief in the universe's essentially timeless existence, and infinitely complex nature, does not necessarily exclude the possibility of something along the lines of reincarnation (for lack of a better term) beyond this singular existence. if time is truly infinite, and the universe has always and will always exist, and my conscious existence has come about through the natural progression of its elements, then it follows that eventually this same type of occurence would- at least statistically- be likely to occur again.
but i'm not betting on it.
