Long live the king! The king is dead!
Musical formations are the phoenixes of this era: the ink that maps out their course hasn't yet touched the yearning paper and already the same pen draws the blueprint of a next version. So it is for others, so it is for LOWRES. Risen from the ashes of Menace in a slightly different formation. But twice as bad.
The remaining members (Dave on vocals, Steve on guitar and Himpie on drums) join forces with first class premium musicians with the necessary mileage in the metal scene. Indeed, no discount second-hand material here: no less than Nicolai (Eternal Breath) on guitar and Foane (from the legendary Anesthesy) on bass finalise the quest for the aspired Lowres Sound. Nicolai is not really new to the 'furious three'. In an earlier version of Lowres he laid down the bass lines. The man breathes music.
Big shout out also to Schottie (guitar) and Leroy and Michiel (bass) who also lived the Lowres live for several years. Godspeed, you black devils!
Between 2000 and 2009 the band produced several demos, which show an inspired journey towards perfection. The most recent step stone on this infinite mission is 'Direct order'. It is the result of a short recording session at the Midas recording studio. On this demo Lowres leaves the trodden path of hard uncompromised aggression to bring in more melody. Which does not mean that the wolves have turned into lambs. The more intimate parts are like the dormant semtex which cloak the deadly smell of ultimate destruction. Like rocking the cradle before you bring out the blowtorch.
This new sound is without doubt the result of the typical creative process Lowres sticks to. Homemade riffs mate with the copy/paste passages of loops and bridges with the addition of a tight rhythm section. Solos are allowed, but not in a Mars-Voltian sense of the word. This isn't prog, this is Lowres hard and gritty. To finish it of, Dave fixes the lot with his cement like vocals. That's Lowres, folks!
Because none of the members originate from whatever metropolitan slum, the contents of the songs never dive into the semi wanna-be-tough-guy shit lots of copycats bring. Wanna keep it real? So stick to the homebrew West-Flanders background you've got. And that is exactly what they do. The only international touch is to be found in the choice of English. Politics, personal experiences and daily frustrations are the razorblades which adorn the brilliant musical necklace.
The result is a satin head stomp. Alcohol in mankind's wounds, that burns to purify.
The same can be said about the gigs. Lowres brings the cleansing fire, Olympian style. They cut through their set, only to stay behind as smouldering ashes on the trodden stage. Lowres gives without receiving. Just to fuse the one spark. They don't play for the crowd, but build together towards a unique experience. It's a solid wrecking ball that crashes into the gates of the almighty to erect their blasphemous flag!
LOWRES is back. Ready to fly the flag of destruction.
