    FACTS FROM THE BRAIN & SPINAL CORD INJURY CENTER

    *TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY IS THE #1 CAUSE OF DEATH & DISABILITIES OF CHILDREN & YOUNG ADULTS IN AMERICA

    *THERE ARE 1.5 MILLION TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES EACH YEAR IN AMERICA

    *CURRENTLY 5.3 MILLION AMERICANS ARE DISABLED AS A RESULT OF TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

    *50,000 AMERICANS DIE EACH YEAR FROM TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

    There are 2 Categories of brain injury. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) & Acquired Brain Injury, but under these are several causes of each.

    A Traumatic Brain Injury is an insult to the brain caused by an external physical force.

    A Traumatic Brain Injury occurs when an outside force impacts the head hard enough to cause the brain to move within the skull or if the force causes the skull to break and directly hurts the brain.

    An Acquired Brain Injury is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative or induced by birth trauma.

    An Acquired Brain Injury takes place at the cellular level within the brain. Therefore, it can effect cells throughout the entire brain, instead of just in specific areas as with Traumatic Brain Injury.

    There are 2 types of Acquired Brain Injuries

    Anoxic Brain Injury

    Anoxic Brain Injury occurs when the brain DOES NOT RECEIVE ANY OXYGEN. Cells in the brain need oxygen to survive and function.

    Hypoxic Brain Injury

    A Hypoxic Brain Injury results when the brain RECEIVES SOME, BUT NOT ENOUGH OXYGEN.

    Types of Traumatic Brain Injury

    * Diffuse Axonal Injury

    * Concussion

    * Contusion

    * Coup-contre coup injury

    * Second Impact Syndrome

    * Penetrating injury

    * Shaken Baby Syndrome

    * Locked in Syndrome

    Types of Acquired Brain Injury

    * Hypoxic brain injury

    * Anoxic brain injury

    Causes of acquired brain injury can include, but are not limited to:

    * Airway obstruction

    * Near-drowning, throat swelling, choking, strangulation, crush injuries to the chest

    * Electrical shock or lightening strike

    * Trauma to the head and/or neck

    * Traumatic brain injury with or without skull fracture, blood loss from open wounds, artery impingement from forceful impact, shock

    * Vascular Disruption

    * Heart attack, stroke, arteriovenous malformation (AVM), aneurysm, intracranial surgery

    * Infectious disease, intracranial tumors, metabolic disorders

    * Meningitis, certain venereal diseases, AIDS, insect-carried diseases, brain tumors, hypo/hyperglycemia, hepatic encephalopathy, uremic encephalopathy, seizure disorders

    * Toxic exposure

    * Illegal drug use, alcohol abuse, lead, carbon monoxide poisoning, toxic chemicals, and sometimes chemotherapy.

    360,000 Troops May Have Sustained Brain Injury!

    On 3/4/09 USA Today reports that pentagon officials estimated for the first time Wednesday that up to 360,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans may have suffered brain injuries. Among them are 45,000 to 90,000 veterans whose symptoms persist and warrant specialized care.

    Army Brig. Gen. Loree Sutton provided the estimate during a news conference about March as Brain Injury Awareness Month. She heads the Pentagon's Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury.

About me:

WELCOME! My name is Pam and I am the creator of LEARNING TO LIVE V2.0 a new Brain Trauma Social & Support Network.

LEARNING TO LIVE v2.0

"Learning a New Way of Living After Brain Trauma"

Social & Support Network for Survivors of Brain Trauma and Their Supporters. Community, Country, Friendships & Fun!

I have chosen the Blue Morpho Butterfly to represent the site. Out of about 24,000 species of butterflies, Blue Morpho’s are one of the prettiest and most sought after by collectors. It’s wings appear to be a mesmerizing, metallic blue, but they aren’t. The color is due to how the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings reflect light. Their underside are dull brown with different sized ‘eyespots.’ Looking more like a moth. Eyespots serve as a defense mechanism against predators. When the Blue Morpho is in flight, the contrasting brilliant blue of the top wings against the dull brown of the underside of the wings almost make it look like the butterfly is appearing and disappearing. This is another defense mechanism against predators. The Blue Morpho’s habitat is the tropical forests of Latin America all the way from Mexico to Colombia. The adult’s usually spend their time on the forest floor or tucked away in the lower shrubs and trees. They rest with their wings folded upward so their brilliant blue is hidden away and they are camouflaged from their predators. These butterflies are beautiful and very interesting. Our Butterfly is named IAMME. I AM ME. Even after a Brain Trauma, you are still you, just different. She was named in a contest by one of our members, Misty B. Congratulations Misty!

MORPHO OF THE MONTH ~ NOVEMBER 2009 is ANDY POWER. (Our version of member of the month) Nominated by his peers. One member said "HIS DEVOTION FOR PRAYER FOR OTHERS IS AWESOME!

Honorable Mention goes to KITANIA K & CHRISTOPHER F, also by peer nomination.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL 3 OF YOU!

ABOUT ME AND MY FAMILY

I am a Christian. I am married to David, for 17 years. I worked as a LPN until I became ill. David is a RN and has Multiple Sclerosis. We have 2 grown children. We have 2 miniature schnauzers, Sophie & Nitro and a 2 grand-puppies, Maximus & Willow. A Malti-Poo & Chocolate Lab.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH BRAIN TRAUMA...

I have worked at a brain injury program in both WV & KY. I have provided private duty care for 3 stroke survivors in their homes. I also took care of my Mom after 2 mild strokes and cared for my Dad in the hospital after he slipped into a coma after a massive stroke that he never woke up from. My husband worked 7 years in the acute care setting at a large teaching hospital as a Certified Rehabilitation RN.

Who I'd like to meet:

WHO I'D LIKE TO MEET

Brain trauma survivors of all walks of life and give them a voice.

Veterans who leave the people and country they love to fight for my freedoms. Who sacrifice daily in ways I can't imagine. Those that sacrifice more and the families of those that sacrificed all, that I might live in the best country and the best state, West Virginia.

People who have a passion to work with brain trauma survivors and those that have had to adapt because life has thrown them a curve ball, but instead of throwing up their hands and running away, they have grabbed a warm wash cloth and started washing the face of the person they loved. And started making plans for the future. Just a different one than yesterday.

Andrew (Andy)Power. One of God's finest prayer warriors and dearest online friends I have ever known.
