Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Lucia Evans left her homeland at the age of 19 to discover a new life in the West. Stories she had heard of Ireland's love for music were a defining factor in her choice of destination. Once here, she found herself drawn to Galway with it's vibrant arts culture.
She soon became a fixture on the local live music scene, fulfilling her lifelong passion for singing. This eventually led to her taking part in the national television talent show 'You're A Star'. From the outset, her vocals left an indelible mark on the general public and in April 2006 almost half a million of their votes swept her to a clear victory. Soon after the show finished , she scored her first top 10 hit with the song 'Bruised But Not Broken'.
Her next single release was 'The Other Man'. This track was the result of her first attempt at songwriting. Released as a download only, the song reached number one on the iTunes chart.
Although her successes were a rewarding experience, Lucia still felt like a novice in the industry. Being something of perfectionist in all areas, she was on a constant quest to improve, not only in songwriting, but also in what many assumed she already did best - singing. As good as she was, Lucia felt that to be up there with the best, she needed to work and learn and train her voice much more.
She began studying under the world famous Speech Level Singing (SLS) method, a technique used over the years to train many of the world's greatest artists. Everyone from Liza Minelli to Madonna have trained under SLS as have Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.
The deeper she delved into the SLS method and seeing the effect it had on her own voice, the more she wanted to share that knowledge with others. Taking regular courses both in Ireland and Los Angeles, she reached a level of teaching qualification. Contrary to common belief, those who CAN, teach, and that is exactly what she did, (and still does in spite of her busy schedule!) finding the experience of vocally coaching others, immensely rewarding.
Lucia was also applying herself to developing her songwriting skills. As part of this learning process she had looked through the wide spectrum of musical genres. In so doing, she discovered a plethora of Blues, Soul and Gospel music. She felt that these were the building blocks of nearly all music from the last 60 years. Ironically those genres had not been in abundance as part of growing up in Africa. She had grown up listening to the likes of Whitney Houston and early Mariah Carey, mostly western pop music with the odd African artist coming to the fore.
She had kept herself out of the limelight for a while and was quite happy with that. However, there were constant calls for her to perform and eventually, bowing to pressure especially in her local area, she agreed to perform two nights at the Townhall Theatre in Galway.
The show gave Lucia the opportunity to showcase her new found love for some of the greatest soul, blues, jazz and gospel songs ever written. She assembled a stunning nine piece band of Galway musicians to bring the songs to life on stage.
There were plans being made to record an album of these songs in the studio but as rehearsals progressed it became apparent that there was only one way to capture these songs and that was truly live. The results of those shows now form the new album from Lucia called 'Natural Woman'.
