Lucid Mechanism is the brainchild of Timo Preece. He has joined forces with vocalist and songwriter Sarah Tancer to create a a sonic experience that pushes the boundaries of live electronic music. Stylistically expansive in nature, Lucid set flows through genres such as drum and bass, industrial, minimal, ambient and experimental, drawing on such influences as Portishead, Nine Inch Nails, and Trentemoller to name a few. Songs are woven together with soundscapes and live improvised drumming.
Not unlike a buzzing insect, Timo Preece (GravityTerminal) has been attracted to blinking lights and warm gear since childhood. He obtained his ethnomusicology degree at UCLA and has done a number of studio recordings, projects and live performances with noteworthy individuals including, Frank Serafini (film score and music video producer- TRON), Shane Berry (Trapez), Echoplex (Soleil), Medicine Drum, Dubstract, and others.
For four years, Timo was based in Tokyo, Japan working to create new electronic based music - ranging from designing and creating music and sound design for web sites, DJ events throughout Tokyo, live electronic shows, radio, CD/DVD productions and audio mastering. Now based in San Francisco, Timo continues working in Pro Audio. In addition to freelancing at Current TV and instructing Ableton LIVE/Laptop Performance courses at Pyramind, he is teaching DAW and Advanced Post Production at Expression College for Digital Arts.
Although classically trained in voice and theatre, Sarah Tancer also can’t help her fascination with blinking lights, computer music and anything experimental in nature. She spent most of her stage career in New York City creating and performing original dance theater pieces and singing in very ‘out there’ operas. She is also a featured vocalist on a number of house music labels such as Subliminal, Effin and Pacha records. Her songs have been played on Pete Tong’s essential mix on BBC Radio 1 and on Sirius Radio. Since moving to San Francisco, she is working as a voice actor and can be heard in various interactive video games. With her keen attention to lyric craft and haunting voice she weaves a spell of storytelling through Timo’s compositions.
Lucid Mechanism is the musical alchemy of structure, technology, fluidity and humanity; casting its spell with dark rhythms and dreamy melodies.
