Bio
.. .. Lucien Zell is a poet, musician, and thinker originally from California, who now lives in Prague, enjoying its "electricity", its "gravity", and its people. You can read just a little bit about Zell on the back cover of his third collection of poems Bright Secrets published in Prague in 2006, but to get to know him more intimately you would need to commune with him through his poems or, better yet, in person. .... As suggested by Lucien, we met at Kafícko, a small café around the corner from the Charles Bridge in Malá Strana. It is reasonably quiet, with the background of other people's conversations, the sound of the espresso machine, and lovely music coming out of the speaker near our table. Perhaps, it is by coincidence or, as we later agreed, the "magic" of Prague, but Zell's good friend and colleague Bren Farrell appeared at Kafícko at the same time as our interview. They are working together in the band "The Wavemen" and at the moment are recording an album called "Fall Into Flight". .... Zell has been traveling around Europe for the past 13 years exploring other cultures, filling his notebooks with poems, and writing music. I asked him if he studied music or writing. It turned out that he spent some time at the Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, dropped out, but still and forever is "in school" continuing his education. His exact reply was, "In fact, every gallery that I go to, every book that I read, I feel it's a part of my continuing education." .... After "getting humanized", as Bren Farrell called drinking a cup of coffee, we shared some of our experiences of what one could call a coincidence. The subject found us, as Zell told the story of the person who translated one of his poetry collections into Czech. It happened that the translator "had an interesting link" to one of Zell's poems in the first book. It is a short poem that goes as follows: .... ..Maybe there's a beginning before every beginning./ Maybe there's an end after every end./ Maybe there are love letters we are writing/ That only our children can send... .... The story in the poem was Zell's translator's life story!... he had to deliver a letter, written by his father to a woman his father loved for many decades. The father was on his way to meet that woman when he died. So the son, Zell's translator, had to bring his father's letter to that woman. "It is amazing! What a coinci-..." I paused, "you can't even call it a coincidence." .... "What could you call it?" asked Lucien with great interest, and our conversation continued with a similar experience Bren had in the metro that day, and the fact that both of them, Zell and Farrell, were in the same café at the same time, without having planned it. Zell retold the story by O. Henry called The Green Door trying to show his view of how our life events are interwoven with both our choices and moments of coincidence or magic. We all agreed that it is hard or impossible to define it exactly, other than unexpected magic, because it is so special and unpredictable. That magic and many "green doors" brought Lucien Zell to Prague to explore, think, write, and create. .... The ultimate goal that Zell would like to pursue is to be a part of a band that could travel and share their souls with the audience's souls under the "disguise of music." This realization came to him after reflecting on a concert as a gathering of people who came to receive and absorb the energy that comes from the band, "if the band's souls are tuned to the same rhythm." Although those people, according to Zell, would not agree with this kind of statement because "many of us are very stubborn" he believes that the concert is just a mask for their real desire to be involved in soul sharing. .... An hour and a half flew by, then we had to end our conversation. Lucien loaned me his third published book of poems to read. We agreed to meet again soon to continue our exchange of thoughts. .... Reflecting on the interview, and on how Lucien talks, I compared his way of talking to my own and that of some of my friends. I arrived at a vivid image of one glass of water being spilled while another is being poured. I've heard many people spilling out their thoughts. Lucien pours his ideas and realizations without any rush, as if he were writing a poem while he spoke. That is a result of "cultivating" the kindness and compassion that he reserves time for every day. He said that it is important to find the time and place to read, see art and take "poetry baths" for our hearts. .... I walked down the street away from Kafícko after the interview. Enjoying the soft light at the end of the first spring day, I contemplated the conversation with Lucien. "Have you experienced that magic in Prague?" he'd asked me at some point. And I wondered how many people could answer "Yes" to that question..... - ..natasha dostalyova (c) 2006.. ...... ..The Poet Lucien Zell in Prague (with Czech subtitles).... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..The Wavemen - WAITING AT THE EDGE.... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .... ..The Wavemen - JUICE OF THE ORANGE.... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. -
