About me:

Lucky

a children's story

This children's book — based on real events — tells the story of Lucky, a parrot who is captured in the wild and eventually regains his freedom with the help of a young boy.

The story helps encourage children to be kind to animals without being didactic and gently awakens readers to the plight of birds caught in the wild.

Written in 2004, this much-awaited story is finally be available. To order your copy visit www.luckythelorikeet.com

The Real Story of Lucky

The author of the story has been involved for many years with the Indonesian Parrot Project, a non-profit organization that works to provide sustainable income to villagers in eastern Indonesia to protect parrots and parrot habitat from cruel and destructive trapping and logging activities.

During the author's last visit to Indonesia in September 2003, the Indonesian Parrot Project team acquired a wild-caught rainbow lorikeet who had been chained to a perch (a common practice in Indonesia) for more than a year. After being freed from the chain and slowly regaining his ability to fly, the bird — whom we called “Lucky” — returned to freedom in the forest.

Since that trip, a wild bird rehabilitation and release center — aptly named kembali bebas Indonesian for “return to freedom” — has been built on the island where Lucky was released. To date, more than 500 birds have been sent to the facility to be cared for and released by villagers, many of who are former trappers.

Below are some pictures of the real "Lucky"

Thank You For Supporting The Wild Animal Sanctuary!  For over 29 years The Wild Animal Sanctuary has been rescuing Captive Wildlife across the US. The Sanctuary is home to over 170 wild Animals including Lions, Bears, Tigers, Wolves, Mountain Lions, Leopards & Small Cats that live on 240 acres of rolling grassland just outside of Denver, CO!
The Animals are rescued from private owners who keep them as pets, commercially exploit them in circuses & roadside attractions, & bred them over & over, just to sell their cubs for profit. There are about 25,000 animals in the US that are in this condition.  They arrive emaciated, usually with urine burns on their feet (result of walking in their own urine & feces), fluid-filled joints (from living in concrete cages), bone deformities (from poor nutrition), & facial deformities from abuse. They come to a place where they have spacious indoor/outdoor habitats, the best quality food available, plenty of time to run, play & swim, with lots of love & affection!
The Sanctuary has an annual budget of $1.5 million.  Please support the Sanctuary in any way that you can, either financially or by spreading the word.
Please check blog postings on the profile & in group Animal Sanctuaries, Rescues & Zoos for updates.  If you have any questions or comments, feel free to send an e-mail!

YAY for Lucky! I'll have to get a copy -- I do presentations for kids about the wild nature of parrots (and why they're not good pets) at the SPCA humane daycamps each summer!
