  • Bio

Where to start? I've been writing songs and attempting to play various instruments since I was in my teens. One of my earliest lyrics was 'You treat me like I'm covered in poison / You think I'm weird cos I like Space and you like Boyzone' about a girl I'd fallen out with at the time. (Story of my life.) I've always been into music of all kinds and a lot of my current musical taste was formulated by the endless compilation tapes my mother used to play to us in the car. Not to mention my father's tapes of bizarrely named country and western stuff (Shoot Low Sheriff, I Think She's Riding A Shetland, anybody?) Although my first favourite band were Abba, and I was infatuated with Blur for a bit when I started high school, it was Space who inspired me to write songs, and Cerys Matthews of Catatonia who inspired me to pick up a guitar, just so I could be better than her. Hey, I was only 14... ..By the time I started uni, I had about 4 albums' worth of songs recorded on tape, with the help of a little Fostex four track recorder I had 'borrowed' off a friend and never returned. After bumping into an ex in Bruins in Fallowfield (now sadly closed), I did a few open mics, where I kept bumping into the man who is now my boyfriend, and a gig for Unite Against Fascism when some fuckwit from the BNP was trying to infiltrate Manchester Students' Union. Some were good, some were not. Especially the one at Glass for StopAIDS where I was pissed off my face... ..For about 9 months or so, I was rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist (and sometimes drummer, lead guitarist and dogsbody) for Midland Railway, until I got the push. I'm not going to go into what happened as it is pretty ugly and to be honest, I can't be arsed rehashing it all. At least I got to play the Cavern (no, not THE Cavern, that's apparently a car park or something) and the Roadhouse, which was nice... ..So now I'm back on my own again, with LucyShadow (I got the idea for the name from Bella Besame, Manchester's finest burlesque artiste). I'm also in an as-yet-unnamed supergroup of sorts (ha) with Jon 'the Master Bluesman' Martin, Louise 'Irwin the Pixie Slayer' Sutcliffe, and Lukecore, who may or may not be called Moose Test, and am working on a Space tribute album, which I know will make everyone reading this go, "Space? But they were shit!" To you maybe, but they helped me get through my teenage years. Thankfully I'm over the phase where I taped every single appearance they made on TV and radio, bought every magazine that featured some coverage of them and wrote bad poetry about the band members...but I got the idea after they split up. I wanted to give something back, so to speak... ..Also, music runs in the family - my little brother Jack plays bass with Death Of A Party (their MySpace is here: http://www.myspace.com/deathofapartyband - go check them out, they're boss). He will probably kill me for saying this... So there you go.

Random shit that I may have been listening to that week.

Me. I could compare myself to Kirsty MacColl, as apparently I sound like her, but that's a bit arrogant.
