Bio
A Love Story The Love United Gospel Choir was founded at the University of Tennessee in 1970. The choir was formerly known as the John 23rd Singers based out of St. John Baptist Church in Alcoa, TN. The leadership of the choir began to notice the love and unity that was present amongst its members and hence changed the name to the Love United Gospel Choir. In the early years of the choir, there was a very dynamic population. Students came from all races, ethnicities, cultures, and walks of life for the sole purpose of ministering through song. Besides singing, the Love United Gospel Choir and its members continue to serve the UT campus and larger Knoxville community. The Love United Gospel Choir has received many awards in recognition of its hard work including the Chancellor's Organization Award and Chancellor's Citation for Outstanding Service and Leadership in 1992 and again in 2007. The Love United Gospel Choir has also been blessed with the opportunity to travel on tours. The most recent tour, "I Speak Life" in spring 2007, landed the choir in the states affected by the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Here, the choir participated in a number of benefit concerts and community service activities, many of which were reported by the local media in the cities. The choir's most recent achievements include becoming a Charter Choir for the National Association of Collegiate Gospel Choirs, being recognized during the Emerging Leaders Summit held in Huntsville, Alabama in April 2007, participating in a national book launch for renowned author Nikki Giovanni in March 2007, and obtaining acknowledgment from the Dean of Students office as an outstanding campus organization. The Love United Gospel Choir continues to educate and foster awareness of African American culture and history through song, make presentations related to the contribution of the gospel art form through American history, and promote appreciation for gospel music. Since its inception, Love United has expanded the organization and not only consists of a dynamic and diverse choir, but also a Dance Ministry, Touching Hearts Praise Dancers, the Praise Team, and Media Ministry, which is in charge of the distribution of all audio and video recordings. To this day, the Love United Gospel Choir continues to soar to new heights by spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song and dance. -
