From the fallen branches and endless woods to the 19th century farmhouse where he was raised, the lasting memories of Luke’s past continue to haunt and inspire his creativity today. These persistent photographs from his youth pile up against a more recent bird’s eye view of the great city of Toronto.
Now in the constant hum of rushing traffic and in the shadows of towering skyscrapers, Luke thinks of himself as a question mark rooting itself in the cracking sidewalk. Channeling the city’s fierce energy through Luke’s quiet, contemplative songwriting style creates paradoxes and gentle reflections of a frenzied culture. Somewhere in the middle between sound and silence, dark and light, wilderness and metropolitan, Luke seems to find a comfortable shelter in music. This sweet, melancholy picture of our modern world created in his lyrics is dusted off with warm chords and varying rhythms that comb through the vivid imagery.
Recent travels to the poverty stricken, rural Kenya have fostered different perspectives and widened the global heart of this young folk singer. Beneath the hard realities in Luke’s shameless honesty, lies a vigilant and resilient hope for his restless generation. And of course there is always love.
Luke’s humanitarian work with the organizations Me to We and Free the Children carry him around the globe and continue to fill his sails with insight from Youth across North America. Music and work have led him to share stages with bright, young Canadian acts such as; Dan Mangan, Matthew Barber and Elliott Brood as well as activists; David Suzuki, Craig Kielburger and Jane Goodall. Playing as a solo artist or with the support of his versatile band; “The Strays”, Luke’s live performances always deliver a spectrum of emotion, momentum and connection. The appreciation of his latest recording “Sleepwalking Race” continues to expand as his coming album, “Holes in the Uniform” is already in progress. This next record comes directly out of the east African Savannah, the cityscape under Luke’s balcony and off the apple tree in the his first backyard. Live previews ensure that “Holes in the Uniform” features Luke’s most mature compositions to date. Listen for it’s released in 2010.
