Bio:
Luke's Angels are a Minneapolis band, but they are the sweethearts of St Paul. Their brand new album "Paulopolis" seeks to heal the long time divide between these rival cities with charm and chugging rock.
This unpretentious indie rock quartet has drawn comparisons to the Breeders, Throwing Muses, and Veruca Salt, but they're not just an early 90's alt sister rock knock off. Listen closely and you'll hear other influences like Loretta Lynn, the Pretenders, Ride and PJ Harvey. Really, LA has a sound all their own because the music is genuine and their personalities shine through.
After several childbirths, recording a couple of X-mas albums and some lineup shifts, the Angels settled on their current roster, which features founders Jennie Kalpin DDS, Melissa Kalpin MLS, Jennie's husband Josh Richardson (also of Flavor Crystals and Prairie Restorations Inc.) and legendary drummer Nick Hook (Kelley Deal 6000, Deformo, Jan, Vinnie and the Stardusters, Hind Quarterly editor-in-chief.)
What people are saying:
"Paulopolis, the new album from Minneapolis band Luke’s Angels, is Veruca Salt if they could write more consistently catchy pop songs. With the dueling female singers, guitar string slides, and straightahead rock sound the gals (and guys) of Luke’s Angels bring a no-nonsense product that is easily digestible and more pleasant after each listen. ... There is a sound of genuine fun and passion throughout the disc, and that transfers into some quality tunes." -- Nelson Heise, Rift Magazine
"We hadn't noticed a growing level of bad blood between the two Twin Cities, but local band Luke's Angels aims to heal any potential rift with its new second album, Paulopolis. And it just might, because nothing as convivial and charming as the sisterly harmonies of rhythm guitarist Jennie Kalpin and lead axewoman Melissa Kalpin can do anything but lift the spirits. As on its 2003 debut disc, Luke's Angels has a '90s alt-rock vibe that makes comparisons to acts like Throwing Muses inevitable but worthwhile; the group does an excellent job of weaving crunchy rock and melodious girly pop together and getting the best out of both." -- A.V. Club (The Onion)
"Luke's Angels' new disc, hot off of local mix-master Jacques Wait's boards, is sleek and shiny enough for anyone looking for more of the head-bobbing listenability that the long-defunct Breeders can no longer supply. Sisters Jennie and Melissa Kalpin weave their frictionless harmonies as if from a satin loom, while Nick Hook lays on enough syncopated hi-hat to make the metronomic, Petty-esque guitar lines excellent dance floor material. Always willing to grind into a good power chord and the occasional screamy hook, they manage a sound that's at once potent and professional." -- David Hanson, City Pages
"Minnesota-based Luke's Angels ... comes across with the crunchy, power chord-driven guitars and harmonies of Veruca Salt and the tonal quality of Juliana Hatfield with a hint of The Breeders. The sound is embedded in the mid-1990s and updated for the millennium. There's no synthesizers or computer-generated audio here. The Jacques Wait-produced "Paulopolis" is straight-forward alternative rock." -- Adam Hammer, St. Cloud Times
Jennie, your Luke's Angels material is excellent. What a great listen. BTW, thanks for coming out to our show at the White Horse last week. It was great to meet you. I hope to be catching some of your Luke's Angels shows in the cities as well. We'll have to talk Leigh and Ricky into coming to Minnesota for mutual show sometime. - Jeff
