Born in La Habana on september 10, 1970, Lukmil Perez Herrera studied drums and percussion from age 11at the Escuela Elemental de Arte (Elementary School of Art), under the guidance of former Irakere drummer Enrique Pla. Jazz became his passion since then, which led him by the end of his studies to start playing with groups such as Banda JV and Perspectivas, as well as with most members of the Havana Ensemble, a reunion of ex-Irakere musicians and a common path to all contemporary Cuban jazzmen. With them he did his first internationnal tours: USA, Central and South America, and Europe.
Later, in 1999, he decided to stay in Europe to expand his career and quickly started taking part in different projects, namely with the likes of trompeter Mario Morejon "El Indio", bassist Felipe Cabrera, American soul-jazz singer Muriel Fowler, and in Jerome Savary's acclaimed theatrical piece Looking for Chano.
Currently established in Paris, France, Lukmil plays regularly with artists Ernesto Tito Puentes, Orlando Poleo and Sergent Garcia, Olivier Manoury Quartet and is simultaneously readying his own project, the Lukmil Perez Colectivo, a fusion of Cuban folk, soul, funk and electro that includes his all time friends trompeter Julio Padron (Irakere, Afro Cuban All Stars, Looking for Chano), trombonist Juan Carlos Marin, guitarist Norberto Rodriguez, bassist Ronald Moran and pianist Andre Sutre.
