Sounds Like
Baritone vocals like David Sylvian, Peter Murphy, Brendan Perry, and Stephen Kilby - but also influenced by David Bowie, Beck, Trent Reznor, and many others.
Aspirations towards clever guitarists such as Robert Fripp, Michael Brooke, Michael Hedges, Robert Smith, Adrian Belew, Reeves Gabrels, Vinnie Riley, as well as great classicists like Segovia, Julian Bream, and the Ramirez Brothers.
Dreams to emulate great Cellists like Lynn Harrell, Ofra Harnoy, Jacqueline Du Pre, Rostropovich, and Yo Yo Ma - but probably more in line with Rasputina, David Darling, and the like.
Luna Trick is the creative brainchild of English multi-Instrumentalist, Daniel Staniforth. Classically trained as a Cellist, Daniel crafts an array of songs styles - ranging from Indie Rock, Shoegaze, darkwave, electronica, space-funk, ethereal, Alt-pop - to more widely experimental. This sophisticated one-man band act follows in the great tradition of Nine Inch Nails, Beck, and early Cure albums. His hybridized guitar style renders many different sonic colours, which are further enhanced by his willingness to explore various instrumentations, both traditional and innovative.
Luna Trick released two full length CDs in 2008 - Total Submersion and Hoar Frost Sheen (Flowforth Productions/ Sonic Spongecake Records). The CDs are available at CDBaby, Amazon, Amazon UK, or directly from the Flowforth and Sonic Spongecake websites, or as downloads from iTunes, Rhapsody, etc. Both CDs are full of alternative flavourings and influences from the more creative phases of the last couple of decades. Some comparisons given are the Cure, Bowie, NIN, Radiohead, Beck, etc. - but the songs also contain Staniforth’s unique musical signature. A few songs from Total Submersion have received some Indie radio play, including the historical narrative, "Jacobite" - the tragic story, "Tale of Three Ribbons," - and the dreamscape, "Swimmer & the Siren." Similar stand outs from Hoar Frost Sheen are the critique on religious cruelty, "Orthodox Killers" – the confessional, "Tears in Vino" - and the overtly political "Suffer the Fool".
Prophetic Guesses is the third album (2009) from Luna Trick and the hardest and darkest to date. A much more guitar oriented sound this time out, Daniel Staniforth explores the alt-rock realms between funk, ethereal, industrial, psych-jazz, and rock. The thing that makes Luna Trick stand out among alt-rock artists is his extraordinary singing voice ... deep and resonant and full of expression. And he writes excellent songs with intelligent lyrics. Apart from a couple of more ethereal pieces, this album is dark and guitar-driven with a very tightly played and strong sense of rhythm. Stand out tracks include the exquisitely melodic "Night Healer", the richly textured "The Potter's Wheel" with its warm soft vocals spun around a wall of crunchy guitar, the Bowiesque vocals on "Lost Circus", and the darkly ethereal "Magic Shadow".
As as a cellist and pianist, Daniel also composes in a variety of genres from
classical, impressionist, atonal, ambient, to ethereal - whether using real orchestral
instruments or synthesizers. From traditional to experimental, dark to light and airy - his
sophistication and colour may charm the discerning listener. His 2008 Father to Father is a series of impressionistic orchestral pieces written and performed by Daniel in homage to his father, Ken Staniforth, a classical music aficionado. The pieces explore the English landscape of Staniforth's youth and his experiences as an immigrant in America. The CD features the voices of brother, Jonathan Staniforth; Brother-in-law, Julian Lukins; and great-grandmother-in-law, the late Lucia Zarlinga (recorded in her 105th year).
2009 also united Daniel with a new music partner, the brilliant British psych-folk singer, Rebsie Fairholm (http://www.rebsiefairholm.co.uk/). The two started working together on a number of orchestrated folksongs in early 2009 and Daniel was drafted in to perform on and produce Rebsie's second album, Seven Star Green. The success of this project has led them to form a permanent duo under the moniker, Alchymical Muse. Rebsie will also feature on future Luna Trick releases - and there will also be a limited edition folksong release under the title Albion Mill. Visit both Rebsie's and the Alchymical Muse myspace page found in the friends section below for more information on these exciting projects. Also, be sure to check out her stunning debut album, Mind the Gap (2007).

The poet, Anne Waldman, reads her poem, G-Spot, while I accompany on the cello. This was a completely improvisational performance and I am just trying to follow the contours of her vocalization. Alert - wild poetry!
Piano and Cello Improvisation from Rodrigo Gonzales (of Mexico City) and myself. Rodrigo asked me to play with him just minutes before we went up and I thought it was going to be a nice melodic piece! Was I wrong!!!
