Part feminist-inspired riot grrrl band, part gross-out performance art, part hard rock band, New York City's Lunachicks are tastelessly in-your-face and proud of it (the back cover of their LP Binge and Purge showed them covered in fake vomit). Fronted by Theo Kogan, whose on-stage gear consisted of platform shoes, short dresses, surreal makeup, and huge wigs, the L-Chicks grind out a reasonable, messy amalgam of Ramones/Dictators high-energy guitar rock. Song subjects include trashy '70s TV icons ("Jan Brady"), suffering after consuming too much junk food ("Binge and Purge"), and tabloid-style hysteria ("Babysitters on Acid"). Not particularly artful, the Lunachicks are wild and funny, and the music can be pretty hot, but the humor and the rock don't hold up after repeated spins. No matter what your tolerance for this kind of rock is, you'd be better off listening to L7, Bratmobile, Bikini Kill, Joan Jett, or Huggy Bear first, and then finding time for the mixed blessings of the Lunachicks.
~ John Dougan, All Music Guide
Legend has it that New York's Lunachicks were rescued from a life of street gangs, drinking, idolatry and terrorism against humanity by being discovered by Sonic Youth, who recommended the all-female band to Blast First Records so vociferously that the Lunachicks' debut, Babysitters On Acid, was barely recorded before it was let loose upon an unsuspecting public. The "not-at-all-nice-girls" turned their rebellious behaviour into a stage act. Becky (drums), Squid Sid (bass), Gina (lead guitar) and Sindi (guitar) were the musicians with a taste for excessive volume; Theo Kogan was the singer with a predilection for blood-splattered wedding gowns. The Lunachicks can only be described as "different". Binge And Purge was a marked (and listenable) improvement over their debut. With new drummer Chip on board the band took a backward step with Jerk Of All Trades, which lacked the inventiveness of the previous album. Luxury Problem was their first album to be recorded as a quartet, following the departure of Sindi.
Somehow the Lunachicks were overlooked in the whole Riot Grrrl marketing phenomenon, despite hailing from NYC's East Village, conveniently located in the media capital of the world. They're a highly politicized, feminist all-female loud rock band, but they never attracted a tenth of the attention paid to L7 or 7 Year Bitch. I guess it's because the Lunachicks have less of a hardcore/grunge aesthetic: they use overdubs and even occasional guitar effects, plus they articulate their words so you can actually understand them. But they're hardly Neil Diamond: lyrics frequently focus on excretory functions and misogyny, besides plain old-fashioned spleen. Theo's voice takes some getting used to: it doesn't have the raw power you expect from a hard rocker, but she uses it effectively to put across irony and sarcasm. As of now the band is on hiatus; Theo has a dance-oriented solo project and Gina is fronting a new band, Bantam.
