Lunar 9 was an ambient electro rock pop group from Minneapolis in the late 1990's. Although critically acclaimed the band never put out an official release. There are several extant recordings but sadly much of the material was only played live and never recorded. It is doubtful if even the members of the band could remember all of them. We will continue to post any archives we come across from this great lost gem of Minneapolis rock history.

“lunar 9” (circa 1999)
One day it was raining earplugs. “But why?” I asked the sky. “Because we are coming,” was the answer from above. I frowned and picked up a pair, tucking them in my pocket. After a week of sculpting Devil’s Towers out of mashed potatoes and humming an odd keyboard riff over and over, I found myself and many others magnetically drawn to the 7th Street Entry. I was shuffling about in the crowd when there commenced a humming and a throbbing there that sparked right up from the floor and ignited my toes. Extinguishing them in two cups of beer, I heard the voice again. “Now!” it commanded. Of course, the earplugs! I reached for my pocket instinctively, losing balance in the beer cups, but managing to stuff the earplugs in their proper orifices in time for local band Lunar 9 to seize the stage for their first show ever.
Like I need sunglasses to protect my retinas from the pure fire of the sun, I needed earplugs to shield me from the sheer aural force of Lunar 9’s inaugural landing. I could feel the sunburn of leftover space dust flush my cheeks as it fluttered off their instruments. I stood entranced, nearly electrocuted via my beer-soaked tootsies as the band unleashed what front-man Jon Hunt calls their “analog electronica” sound.
More specifically, that sound serves up a savory combo dish of psychedelic ‘60s and electrono-sonic ‘90s tunes with sparkle and swirl aplenty. Throw in a good old fashioned pinch of British mop-top pop, and some hypnotizing synth flavours, and their thick, inner-space melodies twirl across the aural palate more rich and rockin’ than Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey. To hell with Olestra—this trip is the real thing, fat grams and all.
Hunt has fashioned his army of extraterrestrials from (and still shares with) other local outfits as various and historic as Shatterproof, Ousia, Shapeshifter, Landing Gear, and Deep Shag. And the alien children of Lunar 9 have landed only to take off with a bang. They don’t have a record deal yet, but a stellar, Radiohead-reminiscent single, “Prozac Melody,” is currently in rotation on Radio K, a catchy demo circulates, and even Billboard Magazine has taken notice. And with a melodic frequency now adjusted to Earth standards, it’s now safe to enjoy Lunar 9 shows without earplugs, sunscreen or fire extinguishers. [bim johnson]
