Latin American group Lunfardia performs a vibrant mix of song and dance music from Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, etc. They have recently recorded their first album and will perform a nationwide tour to launch the CD in March 2008.
The quintet is a development of the duo partnership between guitarist-singer Ariel Hernandez and accordionist Dermot Dunne who together have performed over 100 concerts to great acclaim throughout Ireland in recent years.
Lunfardia adds violin, bass and percussion to the existing duo.
Lunfardia have already performed at a number of prestigious venues and festivals including Farmleigh Affair, National Concert Hall, Garter Lane, Mermaid Theatre and recently the Spiegeltent as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival (a concert broadcast live on lyric FM).
LUNFARDIA
Lunfardo is a language developed in the lower classes of Buenos Aires at the end of 19th century. It is a mixture of European, African and native Argentinean languages and is bound inextricably with the music of the city and of the peoples that have congregated there. Lunfardia refers to the world that surrounds this unique, rich tongue, and the group brings together original compositions by Ariel Hernandez and traditional Latin-American pieces: a trip from the heart of Buenos Aires through the magic Tangos, Milongas and Candombes, the rough-hewn Chacareras and Zambas from the Argentinean northwest, the cheerful Huayno from Bolivia, the strong percussive beats of Afro-Peruvian rhythms, the vertiginous Joropo Venezolano and the fast melodies of Choros from Brasil.
PICADA PA’ CINCO
A “picada” consists of very simple hors d'oeuvres , each served in small plates. It is usually a variety of salami, cheese, ham and olives served with bread. “Picadas” can be found all around Argentina, not only in the cities but also in the most remote town in the countryside, especially in the traditional “pulperías”. These were stores that doubled up as bars and the venue where Gauchos used to gather for a drink and to play the guitar.
Our repertoire is after all, like a “Picada” of pieces from different parts of Argentina and South America. We invite you to taste and hope you enjoy all the ingredients of this traditional meal.
