Born and raised in New Orleans, Lu grew up with a guitar in his hands starting at the age of 5. When he turned 19 he went on to study music at Loyola University in New Orleans and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. At the age of 21, he returned to New Orleans and began playing around town in the local jazz clubs and and favorite musician hangouts. He put together a 3 piece power trio called "The Tritones" that would go on to perform in concert with such artists as Eric Johnson, Allan Holdsworth, Steve Morse, John Scofield and The Rippingtons to name a few. In 1990 Lu won an award / grant as Jazz Composer of the year sponsored by “Musicians For Music” and the “National Endowment For The Arts.” This provided Lu the chance to put out his first recording and have a video documentary made which would air numerous times on PBS in New Orleans.
In 1994 Lu joined forces with local guitar legends Cranston Clements, Scott Goudeau, Jimmy Robinson and Phil DeGruy to form the renowned guitar quintet "Twangorama." Scott Goudeau would later leave the band moving to Nashville. At this point the band brought in Paul Clement on bass and Mark Whitaker on drums. The band became quite popular around New Orleans, and would go on to do a tour in Europe in 1997.
After several years Lu would leave the band to move to Dallas and Austin, Texas to pursue other opportunities. But, it would be hard to keep away from New Orleans. Finally, in 2005 he returned to New Orleans just in time for hurricane Katrina(timing is everything)!!!!!! After sorting things out and helping to rebuild his parents home, he decided that Nashville would be a better place to pursue a musical career.
While in Nashville he went to work for 2 different companies doing sales and consulting to the recording studio world. While doing this he got to work with such people as Kent Wells (Dolly Parton), Michael Davis (Dolly Parton), David Z (producer for Prince, Johnny Lang, Etta James, etc.), and Marty Williams (producer - Rascal Flatts) to name a few. In working with such world renowned musicians and recording engineers he realized that for them to rely on him for his talents as a studio tech, engineer and consultant.........he must be pretty good at it. So, why not work as an engineer as well. Soon he had several opportunities working as a freelance mix engineer on several recording projects in Nashville.
In April of 2007 he returned to New Orleans, and started working out of the Music Shed as a recording and mastering engineer. Finally in the summer of 2008, Lu decided to work independently. Since returning to New Orleans he has worked with such artists as Anders Osborne, Raphael Saadiq, David Z, Colbie Caillat, Lifehouse, Natasha Bedingfield, Randy Newman, the Radiators, Blessed, Rebirth Brass Band, Fats Domino, Dave Jordan, Joe Krown, Belinda Butler & The Good Things (Australia!!!), Bonerama, Beatin' Path, Roswell Rudd, Lorraine Hess, John “Papa” Gros, American Idol Rewind (Jay Weigel - producer), Tyler Perry's “Why Did I Get Married” (Jay Weigel - producer)Terrence Blanchard, Gary Hirstius and Ed Anderson to name a few!
Currently Lu is recording and co-writing the upcoming CD for Gary Hirstius with Anders Osborne co-producing and co-writing. And, he is also in the mixing and mastering stage for the upcoming CD for Belinda Butler & the Good Things from Australia.
