Mark Bezerk writes and plays songs stacked with soul. He delivers thought-provking songs on the live stage with a lovely edge, and he's got some glorious insights into how we're living our lives. There's natural power there in Mark's songs - with or without the guitar; his acapella-style 'Soul Pollution' must be one of the classic songs of 2008. Mark strikes a great balance between sock it em soul, David Byrne funk, and the protest ethos.
Carl Cape plays homespun folk-blues and sings songs about people from all sides of the planet. Strumming his acoustic guitar, with a case of harmonicas by his side, there are echoes of Woody Guthrie, Oh Brother Where Art Thou, Greenwich Village and Glastonbury. His inspirations include Jah Wobble, Donovan and Christy Moore. There’s a strong story-telling narrative in Carl’s ballads and he'll take you on a musical journey from the Borders to India.
Bill Read is an accomplished finger-picking guitarist and folkie singer with hints of Richard Thompson, John Martyn and Jez Lowe. Whether it be the Socialist A-Z, or a geordie mining song or one of his own creations; Bill's been a woo-ing audiences with his lush guitar sound and some beautiful playing and snging. A wonderful live performer.
David Ainsworth. The new lad on the block is fast gaining a name for his gorgeous singing and accomplished playing. He's clearly one to watch with a raft of new material coming into his own live sets. Fabulous vocals.
Watch out for guests like Jamie Robb. This young fiddle player was in action at Bubbles Bar in Ashington recently and he had the audience on the edge of their seats with a finale of slow airs, jigs and reels. What a reception he got! Jamie's bridging traditional and contemporary folk and doing so with a deft touch.
Regulars to Lush will know that there's often a special guest or 2 turning up. This year's delights include: Buddhist Stan from the Borders (a magical set from which the live track above - Wild Mountain Thyme - is taken), Jonny Bell's slide blues, and Chris Lloyd Jones and harmonium at Kielder.
