Lusiana Lukman is an artist of many talents and inspirations. Her artistic exploration was developed early on from her piano studies, to art, to composing and photography. Lusiana is continually exploring new ways and venues to communicate her artistic and spiritual ideas. Her own mother first introduced Lusiana to the piano at age three in Indonesia. Her move to Canada began her pivotal artistic development.
As a Composer and sound creator Lusiana's music has evolved from the Classical art music to an innovative electro-acoustic movement. Her Indonesian-Chinese-Canadian background and her passion of combining the traditional and the avant-garde approach have resulted in her exotic yet futuristically unique music. Her music has been described as honest, refreshing, inspirational, bursting with energy, original, and reflective.
As a symbolic Painter and Photographer Lusiana's paintings have been described as original, whimsical, very colourful and expressive. Her photographs are poignant, reflective, moody, a unique point of view of nature and inspirational.
As the executive founding director of CMC, her passion is to inspire and teach her students (of all ages) the beauty, the magic and the joy of music & art. Ultimately, when you know what music is, you know who you are, it is a spiritual discovery. Music is a gift from God. It's is the language of love, spirits and the universe.
Lusiana's calling is to create new music based of natural, self-made, existing and intriguing sounds. I like using everyday sounds to make music. I think John Cage was on the right track. One can use every sound as a colour palette, much like a painter can use anything creatively to add to his/her masterpieces to make it their own. Living in a melting pot culturally diverse city has opened my eyes to absorb everything and create my own perspective. No rule needs to be broken, when the only rule is to be free.
