We draw on a variety of influences, almost any artist we listen to and enjoy will have some kind of creative impact on our music. Bands that have had a big part include Devildriver, Arch Enemy, Scar Symmetry, Eluveitie, Pantera, Into Eternity, Kalmah, Nevermore, Ensiferum, Iron Maiden, Slayer, Children of Bodom, Cannibal Corpse, Lamb Of God, Finntroll, Deicide, The Black Dahlia Murder, Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, Behemoth, Aeon, Nile, Amon Amarth, Entombed, Katatonia, Death, Obituary, Therion, The Chasm, Opeth, Amorphis, Morbid Angel, At the Gates
The story of Lycanthrope is anything but a pleasant one. But even with numerous lineup and stylistic changes, countless disappointments, and even life-threatening illness, it's hard to understand the unflaggingly upbeat nature of the band. Harder still is it to comprehend the growth achieved these past few months and the bright future the notoriously kilted werewolves fight toward with more diligence than berserks in the heat of the battle.
Perhaps the story starts in Vacaville's heady little hole-in-the-wall bar, Cheers; however, for the sake of comedy, we'll start it in 1999, when then ten-year-old friends David Barrie and Chris Patton decided to form a band. The idea was all they had -- and I mean ALL they had -- for the only instruments little David and Chris could play were the clarinet and violin, hardly adequate for a musical endeavor. The desire to play did not fade through the years, and with a little help from a friendly neighbor, Chris (by now an avid guitarist) discovered such acts as Deicide and Cannibal Corpse in his early teens. After Chris gave "live Cannibalism," the infamous Cannibal Corpse showcase recorded at the Emerson Theater to David, David decided to forgo his attempts at guitar and develop the brutal death metal growls we know today. It wasn't easy -- all the Halls cough drops David consumed to soothe his throat in the early months of singing caused...well let's just say his body didn't process it so well.
So the sails were set. Armed with little more than a tuning-impaired Bronze-Series B.C. Rich Warlock and a fuckload of Halls, David and Chris began the arduous search for members -- in a town like Vacaville, that task was more than difficult. But, they persevered, eventually scoring Daniel DeBruler on bass and, in 2003, coming together for the first time as a fully fledged musical collaboration under the name Corpse Haven. Corpse Haven went through two drummers, Alan Sevier and Kelly McCann. But the planets aligned in 2006, when David brought in a friend from band class, a jazz-trained drummer named Mark Davis. Now, in order to not diminish his present metalhead street-cred, let's just say that Mark wasn't the most "metal" of people -- but fuck, he was 15 years old attending a small-town high school in Vacaville, who the hell was? Anyway, Mark fell into the slot without a hitch, becoming more and more integral to the band as the days rolled past.
In June 2006, Josh Tyler joined, heralding the new age of the band as they changed their name to Lycanthrope. Lycanthrope soon began writing stronger original material and started playing shows in V-Town's local bars and clubs. Dan left for college in June of 2007, leading the band to bring in a high school friend named Tim Cooper to play bass. Confused by all the changes thus far? To reitorate, as of '07, Lycanthrope consisted of David, Chris, Mark, Josh, and Tim. Mmk? Mmk. So with this lineup, the band recorded its debut EP, "Tales of the Apocalypse" in the smokey summer of 2008 and thereafter changed its name to Poseidon's Rage. That era was short-lived (I mean really... Metal for fishes? Psh). Shortly after, Josh up and left the band without so much as a good-bye reach-around. The band name now comfortably back to Lycanthrope, Tim took over guitar for a few shows, until, after a few casual text messages and a threat to "Learn our songs or die =D," David brought in Cory Knudson in September of '08 to fill the position. Though at least two years younger than anybody in the band, Cory had no problem fitting in and was soon as much a part of Lycanthrope as the rest.
Later that year, Tim left to become Pvt. Tim Cooper of the US Army. Now bass-less, Lycanthrope turned to six-string-slinging Axiom bassist John Coffee (known only as Coffee) who had jammed Pantera's "Cowboys from Hell" with the band onstage at a show in Concord. Coffee and the band had a good rapport, and soon joined forces, completing the Five-Piece Death Metal Machine, or Lycanforce 5, if you will. Then ensued the infamous wardrobe change for which Lycanthrope is ubiquitously known -- the kilts. Playing a nearly impossible to label mix of melodic death metal, brutal death metal, folk metal, thrash, and even progressive, Lycanthrope is not out to "change the world" or wear any sort of "metal crown," but to play whatever the fuckballs they want and achieve expressionistic transcendence, hoping to take the audience along for the ride.
The now tartan-sporting Lycanthrope is, as of early 2009, composed of vocalist David Barrie, guitarists Chris Patton and Cory Knudson, drummer Mark Davis, and bassist John Coffee. This is the lineup which perseveres to this day, and will persevere far beyond. Now and forever, Lycanthrope is united and strong.
