It's so funny because people address me one of two ways, they either say "are you Smiley from back in the day?" or they will say "are you Smiley the rapper?" well, the answer to both questions is yes and you can address me either way..lol.
I have recreated myself so many times from the early 90's up until now that sometimes it's hard for me to keep up with who I am and what I got going on which sounds kind of psychotic but hey it works!
Back in the days of "Smiley but I'm not friendly" I had so much fun! With me being the first female rapper from Detroit my first single entitled "Smiley but I'm not friendly" was certified gold which was a very good "first step" for me as it pertains to the entertainment business.
My recording sessions at The Disc in Eastpointe Michigan back in the early 90's were a blast! My first, second and third album was produced by several local producers including Duncan Hines from the group "Detroit's Most Wanted". Remixes for my first album were produced by Jeff Mills aka "The Wizard". I was signed to an independant label which was "Bryant Records" who went on to sign other rap groups such as AWOL, Detroit's Most Wanted" and K-Stone (now known as dogmatic). Bryant Records was distributed by Ichiban Records who also distributed MC Breed.
The rap/hip hop game today in Detroit is very simular to how it was back in the early 90's. We had to work a little bit harder because rap music itself was not recongized as it is today. Local rappers relied on local promotors such as Brian Piccolo, who produced "The Rappers Ball" and Dave Bishop to put on independant rap award shows and concerts for artists to showcase their talent. All in all in was a good look and I wouldn't trade it for the world! Nowadays you can catch me on the air, on HOT 102.7 mon-thurs (10p-2a) with "Love dedications and confessions" and if that doesn't work for you then you can always check out Detroit's 1 music video link playing right now on the web at thesmileyshow.com... log on and check out my latest blog!! Now dat's some throw back info fo' yo azzz!
