Reading. Cooking. World religions. Mythology. Mysticism. Interfaith dialogue. Rolegaming (yes, the kind that requires d10 dice -- really!). Baseball. Animals. Travel. A good steaming hot cup of green tea.
Broadening my horizons. Making something out of what I've learned and experienced. Love. Sex (hey, I'm honest!). Deep questions. Paradoxes. Figuring out what I want to be whenever I finally grow up! :)
~RELAY FOR LIFE, the American Cancer Society's signature fundraising event. Why do I RELAY? Because of my late husband, Ken.
Ken and I were together for 7 1/2 years, and had always planned to be married one day. When he was diagnosed in October 2005 with Stage 4 colon cancer, with mets to his lungs and several lymph nodes, all of those plans took a back seat to getting him well. He fought bravely for 17 months, enduring the worst pain and physical indignities imaginable, and through it all I was honored to be his caregiver (the single most difficult, yet rewarding and important, thing I have ever done). On February 26, 2007 -- just four days after we were married at last -- Ken lost his battle.
~PKD AWARENESS. In January 2008, I was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease, a genetic disorder for which (currently) there is no treatment and no cure.
(You can learn more about PKD at the PKD foundation website -- http://www.pkdcure.org/ )
I'm doing my part to raise awareness of PKD -- and raise funds for lifesaving research! -- by participating in the PKD Foundation's annual Walk for PKD, being held in Chicago in September. If you'd like to learn more, or better yet, to donate, please go to my personal page: http://www.pkdcure.org/Lynne.Meyer

Okay, this just made me laugh:
SLOW WAVE is a collective dream diary authored by different people from around the world, and drawn as a comic strip by Jesse Reklaw
Music
This is my new "theme song, " the song I've taken up as my promise to myself. I refuse to let the past rob me of my future. Loving Ken, especially through his last days, taught me how precious life is; initiated me into the truest experience of love itself; and how many gifts there are hidden even in the midst of pain. Life is to be lived to the fullest, felt deeply, experienced, tasted, savored... Time goes by all too quickly.Movies
Check out the finest actor to be found on MySpace, North Roberts. A friend who is now the love of my life, he's simply wonderful.
If you want to see some of his handiwork, check out his upcoming horror film, "Bled White". You can find the details here.
You can also find him in the film "La Migra: Murder on the Border" (yeah, that's right -- I'm dating the bad guy!...and he's SO GOOD at it!). Click here and you can see the trailer. Use the drop-down menu at the top of the page and click on "Murder on the Border". If you're on Facebook, be sure to look up his fanpage!

Books
Mostly non-fiction, although I am becoming a HUGE fan of Neil Gaiman's work (I eagerly devoured Anansi Boys in one 8-hour sitting!). Really, though, I JUST LOVE BOOKS! If I had the time and the space, I would be reading and buying books constantly! I love to learn, to think, to be challenged, to expand my horizons.

Reading is a profound and SENSUAL pleasure for not only my mind but my body, too...there's the visual delight produced by the words on the page; the smell of the ink and the paper (GOD, old books are especially great in that respect!); the feel of the book in my hands...

I'm a major-league bibliophile, so you can imagine what happens when I get into a bookstore! At this point, I have pretty much filled every conceivable spot in the apartment with books, shelves, and more books! I'm definitely the kind of gal who ALWAYS has stacks of books by her bedside (reading in bed can be sexy, you know...with the right person and the right book!).

It is so hard to choose, but one of my all-time favorites is Edmond Rostand's classic, Cyrano De bergerac. I identify with him -- an outcast, an intellectual, an insecure romantic, an iconoclast. The poetry and romance of it is all so very appealing.
"And what is a kiss, specifically? A pledge properly sealed, a promise seasoned to taste, a vow stamped with the immediacy of a lip, a rosy circle drawn around the verb 'to love.' A kiss is a message too intimate for the ear, infinity captured in the bee's brief visit to a flower, secular communication with an aftertaste of heaven, the pulse rising from the heart to utter its name on a lover's lip: 'Forever.'" ~Cyrano De Bergerac, Act 3

About me:
Who Am I? I'm a perpetual academic, a lover of books and the written word, a geek, and a hopeless romantic who has learned the hard way in life to temper that romanticism with a firm appreciation of reality.I'm a public-school-turned-Harvard-educated but extremely down to earth former college professor who taught courses in world mythology and world religions (yes, I have very global, eclectic interests AND tastes!). I have two Master's degrees; ironically, since my spirituality is very much non-traditional, both of them are in religion. I'm considering going back to school to earn a Doctorate in Ministry within the Unitarian Universalist tradition (I just don't spiritually "fit" anywhere else!).
Among my less-expected passions are Looney Tunes cartoons, Calvin & Hobbes and other forms of wonderful silliness.
I love all animals but especially cats.
I'm a lifelong Chicagoan who simply loves learning all kinds of new things and would travel the world if time, money and circumstances would allow it.
Oh, and I'm extremely GLBT-friendly. I absolutely support gay marriage, for example. So if this makes you uncomfortable, and you still want to be my friend, don't say I didn't warn you!
Who I'd like to meet:
Open-Minded, Fun and Creative People who have a passion for and appreciation of life. Nonconformists and those who look at life through a perhaps lightly-skewed lens. People who care about others and have a desire to make the world a better place. Old friends. Others who are dealing with PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease). Cancer survivors and those who love and care for them. Dreamers.Details
