Interests

  • General

Writing! Writing! Writing! Travel, yoga, music of all types, reading, films (and film festivals), chocolate, all foods spicy
  • Music

Beecake, Strange A, Great Big Sea, David Cook, Sarah McLachlan, Oasis, Paolo Nutini, Matt Monaghan, Great Lakes Swimmers, Franz Ferdinand, Beatles, Billie Holiday, Eagles--but really anything from classic '60s rock to jazz from all eras to light rock to Celtic to (Canadian) East Coast to folk to pretty much anything interesting that catches my ear
  • Movies

I like writing about movies. Recent topics: Stone of Destiny, Australia, Passchendaele; in another book--hobbits! I've written about Lord of the Rings many times, including a former book, Unsung Heroes of The Lord of the Rings: From the Page to the Screen, and a forthcoming book, The Hobbits: The Many Lives of Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. I like classics like Casablanca, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, and many others.
  • Television

Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Heroes (and I've written books about them all); the now-gone but sorely missed Pushing Daisies; Doctor Who and Torchwood (despite their upcoming changes and the loss of the Tenth Doctor)
  • Books

Favored authors: J.R.R. Tolkien, always first and foremost; Tony Hillerman; Armistead Maupin; biographies, if they're well written and not just hearsay about famous people
  • Heroes

Creative people who take a stand for their art; my brother; Barack Obama

Blurbs

About me:

Writing is my passion. I now write books about television and films, but I've also written academic textbooks about technical communication and online education.

Traveling is another great interest. A few favorite places: Canada, Scotland, New Zealand. When I'm off on a U.S.-based adventure (separate from adventures with my family), I'm most likely to head to Caladesi Island, FL; Scottsdale, AZ; Santa Fe, NM; Kailua or North Shore, HI.

When I can, I follow NHL hockey. Go, Red Wings! (But I also have a fondness for my closest team, the Lightning, and Vinnie Lacavalier and Martin St. Louis.)
..

Who I'd like to meet:

Good conversationalists, creative people, writers, artists, filmmakers, musicians, singers, photographers--anyone with a passion for expressing themselves
