Taking the Music Back to its Original Art Form
This emcee believes to stem from the roots of trees watered by the essence of Hip Hop. Forget the trees that grow in Brooklyn. Those emcees were spawned from seeds of graffiti’d trees bursting through concrete streets of the Bronx—otherwise known as the Boogie Down. Where rapping meant the message and emcees creatively told their life stories over the percussions of a fat-lipped beat boxer in a lyrical cipher. Captivating—crafting content from a life he’s living and a world he knows. Rhyming because he breathes. Where recognition and respect was given to local Joes who had tight flows and all they ever wanted in return was to get into the party for free—and rock the mic. This is this emcees direction. His affection for rapping is the fusion of passion and talent. He just wants the opportunity to be heard.
Avery Mullen is Lyrically Ill. No—really.
Rap skills and talking about life’s ills are synonymous to that of an observationist who has realized that rap music is missing something—content. Of all the things he remembers about his childhood while living in Roosevelt, Long Island is how rap music used to make him feel. Reminiscent of when he first became influenced by Hip Hop, he vividly recalls My Philosophy by “the teacher”, KRS-One. “It was the first joint I memorized. It was simple and I understood him.” Avery was connected to the music because it had a message, which greatly influenced him to push a pen to paper and be just as poetically potent and positive. In comparison to what he hears today, he believes that music that is creative, positive and uplifting—a reflection of the true school—is placed on the basement floors of radio stations. Irrespective of this daunting reality—because he falls within that category—he has faith that the tides will change in his favor.
Having witnessed the record industry first hand from the book of Q-Tip psalm number 4,080, he has come a long way mentally, professionally and artistically since his pursuit of the big stage began in the mid 90’s. Where he once was a part of a group he is now a solo artist. Where he once would’ve signed for dollar signs, he is more intelligent and reads between the lines. Where he once made mistakes, he harbors no regrets because he’d rather have made them then than now.
There is a mirror reflection of Avery Mullen the man and Lyrically Ill the artist. Avery is as Avery does. He takes his music personally. Concocting verses from the things he sees as well as his experiences because he wants his fans to feel him. He is the voice box for those who don’t have or need the flashier things in life. He is a conveyor of the real world on wax because he realizes that in reality everyone is not rich. There’s more going on besides big pimpin’ and spending cheese. He is a rapper who has been rapping all his life—just because—but worldly enough to live beyond his personal passion. There’s so much more that needs to be contributed to the rap game. He wants the opportunity to play. Let him in coach. God knows he’s had enough practice. He may not hit a home run this time but it’s the first inning and he’s consistent. He’s due. Trust me.
