Lysistrata is a full-length musical by Chris Tilley. It is a musical version of the play by Aristophanes (an ancient greek playwright).
The play (and musical) is set in ancient Greece. Athens and Sparta have long been at war. The women of Greece, tired of their husbands constant absence, make an oath to give up sex until their husbands make peace.
There are some changes from the original in this musical version, but the basics are all the same, just with singing and dancing.
CHARACTERS
LYSISTRATA: a noble woman of Athens; medium-high range voice
CALONICE: a woman of Athens, not quite so noble as Lysistrata, open and comfortable with sex and sexual language; belter, with some high notes
MYRRHINE: a woman of Athens, “a blushing bride, trim and petite, so pretty, young and sweet”; soprano
STRATYLLIS: an older woman of Athens, cranky and out-spoken, “a very substantial lady”; medium-low range voice
LAMPITO: a woman of Sparta, broad of figure and personality, “a specimen of healthy physique; fit, well-toned with upright posture, and rosy cheeks” medium-low range voice
OTHER WOMEN
MAGISTRATE: a self-important political official of Athens; baritone
CINESIAS: a man of Athens, husband of Myrrhine, “a good-looking young one”; tenor
SPARTAN DELEGATE: somewhat hen-pecked husband of Lampito; medium-high range voice
ATHENIAN DELEGATE: an Athenian official; medium-low range voice
HERALD: message-carrier from Sparta to Athens

PRODUCTION HISTORY
This show has not had a full production. It has had two staged readings. (See "Band Memebers" for cast lists from the two readings.)
The first reading took place in 2002 at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. This was an early draft which did not include the opening Prologue or the scenes with the old men and women. It was probably 80' long, with no intermission.
The second reading was done at Elon University in Elon, North Carolina in 2005. This 2-act version (with intermission) was very similar to the current final version.
The script is complete. The score is complete but has not been orchestrated. There is a written accompaniment for piano.
RECORDING
"Oath Song", "I need a man" and "Prayer" are from a live recording of a staged reading from 2002 in Montgomery, Alabama at Huntingdon College.
"What's the matter with all these women" is from a rehearsal at Elon University, Elon, North Carolina in 2005.
Nope never read 'the story of B' but it's on the list of books I want to get to eventually...hmmm maybe after I graduate I'll actually have the time! : )
