Massimo Ranieri is undoubtedly one of the most remarkable Italian singer and actor of our time. In a career that spans for four decades, Massimo acclaimed himself in music, films, on stage and TV performances. He has had a myriad of fans since the 1970’s, making him one of the most popular entertainers. He describes himself as a “cantattore”, an actor who sings.
Born Giovanni Calone, on May 3, 1951 in Napoli, Italy (Via Pallonetto 41 in the old Santa Lucia district). His father Umberto was an Italsider worker and his mother Giuseppina still lives in Napoli. Massimo has 4 sisters (Titina, Teresa, Nunzia and Annamaria) and 3 brothers (Aniello, Pasquale and Fabrizio).
He began singing at a young age while he was working as vintner, errand-boy, fruiterer and barman. At the age of 12 he sang at christenings, confirmations, weddings and birthdays. He made his USA debut at 13 singing with a famous Neapolitan singer, Sergio Bruni, at the Brooklyn Academy. Two years later (in 1966) he had his TV debut in Italy, in the “Scala Reale” Show.
Shortly after he began achieving several awards for his performances, in 1967, he won “Cantagiro”, a tour contest with the song “Pietà perchè ti ama”; a year later, he performed at the San Remo’s Festival with the song “Da bambino”.
In 1969, Massimo released “Rose rosse” and this song became immediately a major hit in Italy and marked Massimo’s emergence as one of the most beautiful voices in the history of Italian music. In 1971 and 1973 he won “Canzonissima” with the songs “Ventanni” and “Erba di casa mia”.
Massimo continued his success by turning to the big screen, in the movie “Metello” directed by Mauro Bolognini. He was honoured with the “David di Donatello” Award and the International Critics Award. His performance caught the attention of a number of critics and filmmakers; as a result he appeared in several notable movies with leading roles throughout the 1970’s.
In 1975, Massimo made his stage debut with a Raffaele Viviani’s work “Napoli chi resta e chi parte”. His success led him to set a 10-years deadline for himself in which to build a stage acting career. He reached his goal and at the end of 1970’ and throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s Massimo was directed by the most important Italian directors such as Giuseppe Patroni Griffi (“Walzer dei cani” by L. N. Andreev) Giorgio De Lullo (“Il malato immaginario” by Molière, “La dodicesima notte…o quell che volete” by William Shakespeare) Giorgio Strehler (“L’anima buona di Sezuan” by Bertold Brecht, “L’isola degli schiavi” by P. Marivaux) Maurizio Scaparro (“Varietà”, “Pulcinella”, “Liolà” by Luigi Pirandello, “Teatro Excelsior”, “Le mille e una notte”) .
Massimo also performed in some musical comedies “Barnum”, “Rinaldo in campo”, “Hollywood – Ritratto di un divo” and “Il grande campione”. In the meantime, in 1988, he won the San Remo’s Festival with the song “Perdere l’amore” which is one of the biggest selling and most loved hits of the story of the San Remo’s Festival.
In 2003, Massimo had his lyric director debut with “I Pagliacci” and “Cavalleria Rusticana”; in 2005 with “L’elisir d’amore”; in 2006 with “La Traviata” in Trieste and in 2007 with “La Traviata” in Tirana (Albany).
In 2004-2005, Massimo starred in the movie “Les Parisiens/Le courage d’aimer” directed by the famous French director Claude Lelouch.
In 2007, Massimo released his first autobiography “Mia madre non voleva. Autobiografia di Giovanni Calone.che sarei io” and in February 2008 “Canto perchè non so nuotare…da quarant’anni” Live at Agrigento Valle dei Templi theatre was released on a double DVD which, in one week, became the top-selling music DVD.
In 2007, Massimo also starred in the movie “Civico 0” directed by Citto Maselli.
He is currently in theatres with a sold-out music nationwide tour, he has starred in the movie “L’ultimo Pulcinella” directed by Maurizio Scaparro.
Massimo is also directing his first musical "Poveri ma Belli" which, next November 2008, will be on stage at Sistina Theatre in Rome.
In the meantime, he is also directing a lyrical opera "La Cenerentola" by Rossini and he had his debut on October 10, 2008, at Comunale Theatre in Teramo.
