Ben Gonzalez: The founder. Former advisor of the Mabuhay Cultural Club. Adapted the idea that Filipinos should take their awareness of their heritage to the next level.

Ben Menor: The valued mentor. Former CEO/Chairman of JTS Northside Community Center. Directed Independence's last four PCN's. Continues to offer theatrical expertise.

Nita Lumagui: The reliable one. Always the head of the parents committee. Auntie Nita has given a lot of time, effort, and money to ensure that Mabuhay Cultural Club stays on top of where it currently is. She keeps the dancers healthy, happy, and active.

Cec Bell: IHS Principal and 2007-2008 Mabuhay Advisor. A driven and responsible woman who believed it to be a necessity for Mabuhay to represent the very best in Philippine culture to Independence High School. Born in the Philippines, but very much raised in the states.

Mariel Biol: The best advisor Mabuhay has ever had. Very dedicated to his club and keeps it strong mentally. Award-winning teacher. Has decided to resign indefinitely as Mabuhay's Head Advisor to pusue a career in nursing.

Trudl Meniado: Former advisor. Current MCC consultant. Lets MCC use her room as a meeting place for conferences and get-togethers. A woman who always makes sure Mabuhay is on track with everything important.

Louie Caces: Mabuhay's Advisor for the 2007-2008 school year. Saved the club from absolute turmoil due to unforeseen circumstances. Mr. Caces has donated his time from his busy outgoing lifestyle to help with the daily traditions of Mabuhay. Like, Mariel Biol before him, Mr. Caces has also taken part as a dancer in PCN--where he did the Tinikling, a crowd favorite. Louie Caces is the youngest advisor to this day.

Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company: The best at what they do. The 2007 Cabinet believed it was important to hone Mabuhay's growing skill in Folk Dance, and what better way than to ask the best folk dance troupe in the bay? Led by Jeff Bado and Justin Mambaje, the Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company specializes in delivering the very best in traditional Philippine folk dance in an age where dances are butchered and modernized. Hiyas has provided Mabuhay with live percussion and rondalla music for their 3rd Annual PCN, and has also worked on giving Mabuhay's dancers better form.

Akbayan of SJSU: The Kuyas and Ates. The Hyphy Heroes. They've been active with Mabuhay since the Ben Menor days. This group is mostly responsible for their current repertoire. Akbayan and Mabuhay's relationship remain one of the strongest in terms of Student-Run Organizations, as both ultimately have the same goal. Mabuhay's Pilipino Cultural Nights are modeled after Akbayan's Pilipino Cultural Nights.

About me:

..
The Mabuhay Cultural Club provides insight on the Philippine culture and heritage. We host many events including Independence High School's annual Pilipino Cultural Night, the MCC Grand Opening Ceremony, and the Senior Farewell Party. We also are very involved with teaching Filipino Folk Dance. Eventually each member who becomes a dedicated dancer will become good enough to perform at fundraising spotshows to not only gain experience as a performer, but community service as well. In addition to that, we teach modern hip hop, and we're connected with Akbayan of San Jose State University and the Filipino Youth Coalition.

What is Pilipino Cultural Night?
A Pilipino Cultural Night, or PCN for short, is a night filled performances to showcase the Philippine culture. The audience will watch the talents of fellow Filipinos as they act, sing, and dance. Different schools have different styles to their PCN's. Again, this is a high school level PCN, but there aren't many high schools that have a PCN to begin with.

Those interested in helping the Mabuhay Cultural Club and Filipino Youth Coalition in planning for Battle of the Tribes 2008, please attend FYC Activities Meetings every Tuesday at Welch Park! For more information, visit the FYC MySpace!

What is Battle of the Tribes?
Battle of the Tribes is an event of unity that takes place annually featuring the schools in the Bay Area that have made significant contributions to the Filipino Youth Coalition. Battle consists of competitive events and a skit that not only showcases Pilipino Cultural Awareness but pride in one's own school and one's own self. Battle of the Tribes is the biggest event in the FYC Repertoire, and is the biggest high school event in the bay.

If you or your group is interested in helping the Mabuhay Cultural Club in anyway, including ideas for meetings, folk dance lessons, or any other purpose--DONATIONS ARE GLADLY ACCEPTED. Contact information is provided in the "Who I'd Like To Meet" section.

MCC's OFFICIAL WEBSITE!

Who I'd like to meet:

Why MCC has a MySpace: The Mabuhay Cultural Club has a MySpace so past, present, and future members can check out the happenings in the club. Memories happen at every instant in Mabuhay, and the members are always there to take pictures. Most of the time, comments filled with pictures are posted, and this is where the members get a kick out of it. Also, this works directly with our official website, so we can host media here and keep news on the website.

Want to add the flash and flair of Filipino Folk Dance to an upcoming event?
Give the Mabuhay Cultural Club a call. Our group of experienced dancers have the skill, joy, and professionalism to make sure your event is as entertaining as possible. As long as you contact us two weeks ahead of your event, we should be able to attend to your needs. Of course, all good things in life aren't free. So call for pricing. Pricing varies on the timeslots, the number of dances, and the chosen repertoire. But one thing's for sure, you will not regret your decision! To book us or for more information, e-mail us at mabuhayculturalclub@gmail.com

It's officially the end of an era.

The Class of 2009 have graduated.

It marks the end of an era because these were the freshmen when I first joined the club as a junior.  Over that year I watched as people matured as performers, as Filipinos, and as people.  I've seen the ups and downs over the years, and this one was pretty special because the kids that we groomed to be the leaders have shown outstanding leadership qualities to make this one of the strongest years Mabuhay has ever had.

We've seen greats such as Brian Pe Benito, Mark Jose, Antonette Bajet, Jeff Vez, Jayvee Mamuyac, Reyna Berania, Shannel Rivera, and a handful of others show undying commitment to the club, knowing that every moment would be worth it.

Our torch has been passed.  Our history has been set in stone.  It's up to the future to make Mabuhay even better, and under the guidance of Janine and Fritz, I see nothing but success for the future.  Good luck Mabuhay, and congratulations to Shannel Rivera, Nikki Diaz, Jayvee Mamuyac, Reyna Berania, Camille Gonzales, and Jeryll Fernandez on a job well done.  NICE JOB CLASS OF 2009!

    Mabuhay,

On behalf of Akbayan and the Community Affairs, I would like to thank you guys for participating at this year's R.A.A.P. Conference despite you guys having your Homecoming. Independence did not show up last year, and it's good to finally have our sister organization back and supporting us.

I would also like to say how proud I am of you for how far you've gotten. Even after I graduated in 2007, which was considered Mabuhay's Golden Year, Mabuhay continues to show consistency by continuously putting up the best PCN's in the high school level. I am proud of whomever it is that has done these flyers, and if you ever need any help or guidance--remember that I am available for any kind of assistance.

    Hey adings,

Your advisor should be handing out your RAAP Packets soon. Remember that only 25 people from your school can represent at RAAP. Get those permission slips in ASAP.
    RAAP is on November 7th!

Hey adings, a few friends of mine in other performing organizations told me Mabuhay did a job well done. I'm sorry I couldn't be there. I'm a poor college student who struggles to pay for gas, so there is no way I'd easily spend $40 for a ticket.

I hope the presence of Kababayan's headliners made you Mabuhay members better performers. Remember, you're not performing for yourselves and you're not performing for other people. You're performing to showcase your pride and love of your culture. Your dances tell a story. As long as you have that mindset, this will not be your last KababayanFest.

Mabuhay, words cannot express how proud I am of every single one of you. It seems bad luck crept up on you guys in every way possible, but you guys totally nailed everything. I want to congratulate you on your fourth PCN, and I'll be crossing my fingers for another advisor to come out and take you guys in. Mabuhay never ends.

Another shoutout to my adings... FRITZ and REZZA. Once again, congratulations, and I hope you have fun with the rest of the year.

Good luck at Battle of the Tribes!
