Influences
Matt Molloy. Paddy Keenan. Donal Lunny. um...The Bothy Band. Liam Og and Christy, so throw Planxty in there too. Seamus Ennis. Anyone with the last name of Vallely or Lattimer.
[In chronological order: The Dubliners, Thin Lizzy, Horslips, The Pogues, Stiff Little Fingers, Dropkick Murphys, Flogging Molly, and the rest of them. A straight line through time, but not so straight.]
Uncle Tupelo. Johnny Cash. Tom Waits. Steve Earle. Ry Cooder. Norman Blake. Doc Watson. Peter Mulvey. Taj Mahal. AC/DC. Gram Parsons. Run DMC. Shane MacGowan and Christy Moore, again. The Ramones. Social Distortion. 7 Seconds. All. Tommy Sands. Luka Bloom. Pet Stinky. Guns n' Roses. The Rolling Stones. The Band. That sort of thing...
Start with a little bit of Irish music. Not Danny Boy and that crap, but the real traditional instrumental dancing music, jigs and reels and that sort of stuff.
Then, there’s the Irish songs. Not Danny Boy. Not yet at least. But some of the drinking songs, the fighting songs, the remembering songs. The old ones.
Now, go on to the contemporary stuff. Still Irish. Christy, Shane, that sort of thing. You know what I mean.
OK. Hang on, cause it gets a little weird next. Throw in some 80s music. Hell, throw in some 70s music too. Hair bands. The Stones. New Wave Pop Music. Whatever you want to call it. It’s what was on the radio when we were growing up. So throw it in the mix.
Don’t forget about punk rock. Because once we figured out that there was more than the radio, the punk rock became a big part of the whole thing.
But take away the distortion. Take away whammy bars. Take away drum kits. That stuff makes it all too easy. Acousticism. That’s where it’s at.
One last thing, I suppose, is the stuff that was playing when we were on the way to becoming “grownups,” the stuff that’s still playing. It’s all good stuff. There’s some country. Some folk. Rock. Stuff that can’t be pigeonholed. Older stuff that we didn’t know about until now.
By this point, you should be starting to get a handle on it. Mix all that crap up, put it on a burner, and let it simmer for a while. Now, you can go back to the Irish stuff. Start throwing in some of the “Danny Boy.” See what comes out.
