Macy Sound Studios is full service, three studio complex located in southeast Denver. Originally built by John Macy and Bill Kerr in the early ‘90’s, Kerr/Macy Studios were host to lots a great music made there--The Dirt Band, Leftover Salmon, Opie Gone Bad, Richie Furay, Nina Storey, Yo Flaco, Celeste Krenz, Steve Conn, Sympathy F, Twice Wilted, Orphan Tears, Firefall, Monkey Siren and lots and lots of others. After leaving the studio in 1999, John Macy re-acquired the studio in late 2007, and has spent the last several months revamping the facility while preserving its sonics and vibe.
Consisting of three studios, Macy Sound Studios can accommodate any kind of project, from the most basic demo to full tracking and mixing sessions. Studio A is the flagship, with a large tracking room (30'x25' with 15' ceilings) and three spacious iso areas (two of them are large enough to track drums in) + two amp rooms, anchored by a killer 7’6” Kawai grand piano and Hammond B3 and Leslie. The A control room has a Neotek Series 3C 36 input console with an outstanding array of outboard gear, with a 32 in/out Pro Tools HD3 and 2” 24 track analogue, as well as John’s favorite DAW, Paris Pro.
Studio B is a nicely equipped, very affordable overdub suite, with a comfortable sized booth and control room. Equipped with an 8 core MacPro running ProTools LE and Logic Pro with a Euphonix fader controller, the room is perfect for overdubs, as well as for outside engineers/producers with home rigs that need more power for mixes as well as access to the compliment of outstanding mics and preamps the facility offers. The studio also has mic tie lines to the Studio A tracking room with the ability to access the piano and organ etc.
Studio C is our "vintage" control room. Dubbed "1977" by the staff, it features an Ampex MM1100 2" 16 track recorder mated to a Tangent analog console, exactly what many studios were equipped with in the '70's. Of course, it also features a ProTools system, and windows into both it's own booth as well as the main tracking room. It is also geared toward independent engineer/producers who need space to edit and overdub. Bring your laptop and we provide the monitoring and anything else you might need during your stay. Also used for a control room/lounge during video shoots.
In addition, Studio A has a 25’ hard cyclorama wall and is available to photographers and videographers, and is available for additional overdubs when not in use by the main control room. It may also be used for listening parties and private showcases.
We have an outstanding compliment of gear, with a huge amount of classic and vintage toys. If names and numbers like U47, 1073, M49, LA2A, ADL1000, C37, KM56, U67, 1176, EMT, 2254, Neve, Daking, Sontec etc. get you excited, you need to check these studios out. If you like esoteric gear like Tchad Blake and others, check out the special rack with many compressors from the broadcast world, including SpectraSonics, CBS Labs, Gates, RCA and others, along with other fun stuff like the Hughes Spacial Enhancers, Dolby A's and others. Check out the gear list...
Studio owner John Macy has been engineering, producing and playing steel guitar for over 30+ years, racking up some fairly diverse credits that run from The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to Gladys Knight to Richie Furay to Big Head Todd and the Monsters. He has several Gold and Platinum records, including a Grammy winner, and has worked on Emmy and Ace award winning projects. Producer/engineer Clark Hagan has based his production company in the facility and brought his Grammy-winning skills (along with a bunch of cool gear) to the team. Nick Sullivan, another engineer/musician, is also based in the facility. Nick is a featured musician with both American Relay and Pena.
