I am influenced by my friends, my travels, food, gold teeth, strippers, pimps, pastors and my family. The woman who made me is my influence. I am influenced by Nina Simone, Josephine Baker, Fela Kuti, Toni Morrison, Akintola Hanif, Michelle Obama, Harriet's Alter Ego, Dilla, Spinna, Adia Whitaker, and MC Rise. I am influenced by the substances I use. I am my influence.
My real name is Madafi Pierre. It is not my stage name. It's not important where I'm from (maybe a lil). I'm more concerned with where I'm at. I am a traveling vessel. This Earth is mine to place my footprints wherever I wish. I am a singer, a writer, an actress and producer. I am forever evolving. I have been singing since Anita Baker came out on the solo tip and acting since the age of 5. My brothers and I (R.I.P. Hamir Michel) used to produce and perform skits every weekend for the fam. Now I perform in show's Off-Broadway (Tambourines To Glory). I have performed in New York City, New Jersey, Miami, Massachusetts, Switzerland and Paris. I have the utmost respect for Michael Jackson (you ain't perfect yourself!).
I recently joined Ase Dance Theater Collective (if you don't know you REALLY need to ask somebody). I am also a member of Brave New World Repertory Theater (I know you heard about Fahrenheit 451 at Prospect Park/Celebrate Brooklyn!). I have had lunch with Dr. Maya Angelou and rapped with the handsome Melvin Van Peebles. I've performed with Bonga Jean-Baptiste, sang with A Few Good Men, and did background for a sunshine of a woman Emeline Michel. I also laughed my ass off with Santiague (Dade County!!!!). I am a glutton for the arts! It's in my DNA. Everything I do was already set in motion by the Most High. I love my life and am extremely appreciative of what I have and what I am able to do. I believe we get better with time so I am not afraid of age. I am optimistic about the future and re-teaching myself patience everyday. I guess you can call me an independent artist but truly I am not. I depend on much and many. To them, I say "Thank You."
