O Baile represents the best of underground Portuguese music happening in London right now. From Bands to Djs and spanning many other art forms, O Baile is a new platform to explore exciting cultural manifestations. Although mainly showcasing emerging talent from Portugal it will also incorporate diverse multi‐national artists. Portuguese Fado and the success of more traditional artists like Marisa and Madredeus have exported Portuguese musical traditions with a contemporary twist. The breakthrough across the world o f Buraka Som Sistema has given us a glimpse of what
other talent is hiding in the underground scene in Lisbon and across the country.
Bands like Gala Drop and Octa Push are starting to grab the attention of the British press
and other acts from Buraka's own label Enchufada are ready for crossing over.
O Baile will provide a platform to present talent from Portugal to a London audience.
Live Music and Djs from Kuduro, Hip Hop, Fado, Electronica, House, Dubstep,
Deconstructed Fado, Rock, Pop and anything else they fancy. Mixed with Food, Fashion,
Art, Design, Grafitti and all things Portuguese.
Mariana Duarte Silva is Portuguese and has lived in London since 2007 where she is representing Portuguese musical culture - opting to move to the great capital for professional reasons.
Her thirst for success was not being matched in Lisbon where she was working as the manager and assistant to many electronic musical projects. She was concurrently working in the largest national media group in the country- yet, still this was not enough- she strived for something that Portugal was simply not giving her.
With suitcases and ammunition she travelled to London in search of new opportunities which she was quick to find whether as an individual promoter or in partnership with other like-minded individuals. Professionally she started work at C Squared Communications where she gained skills to realise a few personal projects. She was invited to be part of the programming of the concerts for the very reputable Atlantic Waves Festival that she had so admired while in Portugal still.
She is also one of the key elements of MAP (Multidisciplinary Program), a project with defined goals running until at least 2010. Mariana is also a freelance consultant at Citizensound as “Madame” where she is in charge of sonic branding and musical marketing for various bands and brands. In parallel to all this, she is also organising events in both London and Lisbon, including events at locations like Sketch and Cargo. At Plastic People, she is currently working on developing a regular presence by partnering British artists with Portuguese.
She is PR/ Manager to Stereo Addiction and Rui da Silva, DJ’s she defends full heartedly. She does image consulting, PR, book their gigs and all the marketing strategy behind the artists, through pure passion.
