Mad as Birds was founded in early 2008 by Susan Bartel (Violetgirl/Violetmusik) and Debbie DeNeese, who last played together in legendary early South Florida punk band The Cichlids.
Mad as Birds made its live debut in August 2008 at the second annual Shelia Witkin Memorial Reunion Concert at Pompano Beach's Club Cinema before more than 1,000 people. The event brought together many of the bands from the heyday of the 1970s and '80s South Florida rock scene — Charlie Pickett, The Reactions, Z-Cars, The Kids (featuring Johnny Depp) — to raise money for charity.
In December 2008, Mad as Birds joined Pickett for a year-end show at Miami's premiere live music club, Churchill's. The band's current lineup hit the stage for the first time in February 2009 at Respectable Street in West Palm Beach (see videos below).
Mad as Birds is taking a break from doing live shows to finish work on several new recordings featuring the new lineup. The songs will be posted as soon as they're completed.
