Madeleine would probably be offended if you told her, to her face, that she was just a singer/songwriter. Sure, she writes all of her own songs and yes, she does in fact sing them, but the label of female singer/songwriter seems a bit limiting when speaking about her music. Of course, a quick look at Madeleine's ipod reveals a love of the chanteuse; there's Sarah McLachlan, Carole King, Natalie Merchant, Jewel, and Fiona Apple. Right next to these artists however, is the Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Television, David Bowie, and other, more dissimilar artists. Madeleine seems to intrinsically understand that to paint herself into a corner as a FEMALE artist or SINGER/SONGWRITER would be artistic suicide. She pursues her music with vigor along with the help of her deceptively tight band consisting of a few more skilled New Yorkers. She wants to make her mark aside from any type of preconceived category of musician. It may be clichéd to say "Don't put her in a box" but the cliché rings true here. You just can't quite pin Madeleine McMillan down, and that most certainly is a good thing.
"Madeleine McMillan is the HOTTEST young artist out there!"
By Matthew Anchel
On the cool, beautiful evening of September 21st, there was something very special going on at CBGB's. A rising star by the name if Madeleine McMillan was gracing the stage of the CBGB's gallery. Madeleine is a New Yorker who has been writing her own songs since she was a preteen.
If you're not familiar with her songs and singing style, you can expect to hear pretty, fun, and GOOD music, and a gorgeous, healthy sounding voice that has range and quality. Her voice is so good that you wonder why people waste their time on HUGE pop sensations who can't sing above middle C and have no pitch whatsoever. You are also glad to find that Madeleine it pretty much, a hottie.
Her gig at CBGB's was spectacular, and her set of songs were selected perfectly, and her band provided her with amazing support and played fabulously. If you haven't heard and/or seen Madeleine, you should.
