About Oscar Deric Brown/Composer/Producer/Keyboardist
Born August 6, 1953, Oscar Deric Brown began playing the piano at the age of three. In 1962, he began his formal training with classical pianist Johanna Harris and her husband, composer Roy Harris. It was Ms. Harris who took Brown to see a performance by Antonio Carlos Jobim, whose music made an immediate and profound impact on Brown. Upon meeting Jobim backstage and learning that the composer’s chief influences were jazz artists such as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane, Brown became convinced that he wanted to become a jazz musician.
In 1969, Brown became apprentice to the world-renowned composer, Oliver Nelson. Simultaneously, Brown studied piano with jazz legends Horace Silver and Walter Bishop Jr. In the fall of 1975, Oscar re-located to San Francisco, where he worked with significant members of the Bay Area jazz scene, including Pharoah Sanders, Julian Priester, Michael White, and Dr. Eddie Henderson.
In 1976-77 Oscar toured with Santana during the Santana One Truth Band World Tour and moved to New York upon the tour’s conclusion. During his first year in New York, Brown played with countless musicians, including David Sanborn, Michael Shrieve, Michael Urbaniak, Narada Michael Walden, and Rashied Ali. In 1978, Brown was hired by the legendary Dizzy Gillespie to play on his world tour.
By 1979, Brown had decided that he wanted to compose and conduct symphonies, which led to his enrollment in Julliard’s conducting program. In 1981, Brown’s 2nd symphony, “Peace To One,” a collaborative work with sculptor/painter Daniel LaRue Johnson, was commissioned by the United Nations and funded by the Yamaha International Foundation, the Tony Goldman Foundation, and the Phelps-Stokes Foundation.
In 1982, Brown played keyboards and wrote arrangements for Marriane Faithful’s album, “Bloodstone,” as well as Debbie Harry’s (Blondie) debut album, "Koo Koo." From 1987 to 1988 Brown worked as a producer for Katsuhiko Nakagawa, Bad Brains, and Joseph H.R., including the albums "Human Rights" and "Singing In The Heart." In 1988, he composed music for director Joel Freedman's documentary film, “To Protect Mother Earth.” That same year, he was asked by promoter Bill Graham to join The Amnesty International World Tour, whose headline artists included David Bowie, Sting, Peter Gabriel, U2, and Youssou N'Dour.
In 1990, Brown performed at the Midem International Festival in Cannes, France, both as a solo artist and as a member of Youssou N’Dour’s band. Later that year, he was asked by director Wim Wenders to compose music for three films: “Til the End of the World,” “Dream Island,” and “Electric Paintings.” The following year, Brown performed the three film scores on a solo tour of Japan. In 1993, he returned to Japan, this time performing duets with painter Mark Kostabi, under the sponsorship of Dentsu and Mitsukoshi Arts. In 1994, their collaborations were recorded and released by Toshiba/EMI as the album “Brilliant Colors."
A pivotal moment in Brown’s life came in 1995, when he travelled to Kobe, Japan as part of Youssou N’Dour’s band and witnessed the devastating effects of the Hanshin Earthquake that destroyed most of the city. Feeling a deep need to help the victims of the disaster, Brown partnered with Kenny Inaoka and artist Kenji Koga to produce a unique project that included some of the top names in music. Brown brought together artists such as Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Dave Holland, Pat Methany, Jack DeJohnette, Mino Cinelu, Mirolav Vitous, Sakamoto Ryuichi, and Gary Peacock to record a full length album and perform a live concert in tribute to the victims of the earthquake. The concert, or The World Music Festival in Kobe, along with the album, "The Rainbow Colored Lotus," was named by CNN, Billboard Magazine and Variety Pro as one of the most significant musical events of 1995. The success of the concert and recording helped to replace musical instruments for thousands of children.
In 1996, Brown composed music for Michael Fazwa's controversial film, "Storybook Red," and began composing for Fox Television's "New York Undercover" (1996-1998). In 1997, he was comissioned to compose music for the opening ceremony of the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. Brown relocated to Los Angeles California later that year to compose music for the animated television series "Rugrats" and "Zip & Terri.". In 1999, he composed and produced an album for vocalist Nora, of renowned salsa band Orquesta De La Luz.
In 2000, Brown composed music for The Virtual Exposition at the Millennium Dome in Greenwich, UK. He served as musical director for the 2001 Latin Grammys, collaborating with artists Celia Cruz, Cyndi Lauper, and many others. In 2002, he composed and produced artist Ricky Bell's album, "Racardo Campana.". In 2003, Brown performed a solo piano tour of Japan. After taking two years off to write music and spend time with his family, Brown returned to performing in 2006, recording a solo performance live at Steinway Hall for the company's 150th Anniversary.
In June of 2009, Brown's Quartet will embark on a world tour to promote its new album "I Cant Cry For Love," released by Brown's label, Brilliant Color Works, in partnership with LRT/Universal.
