Pull up your favorite search engine and dig for quotes about the music industry. You won’t find a lot of happy thoughts. Most of what you’ll find paints an ugly, bleak picture of a cynical, thieving and dying industry run and inhabited largely by incompetent liars and crooks. Madside can relate.
In 2005 there was reason for hope. “Enemy”, the lead single from the band’s debut, self-titled album peaked at 24 on the Active Rock radio chart, which wasn’t a bad start for an unknown artist signed to an unknown independent. Then it got ugly. The details of what followed aren’t worth repeating, and unfortunately represent a set of circumstances all-too-well known by hundreds of artists. And with that, Madside was indoctrinated in the oh-so-glamorous world of unpaid royalties, stolen publishing money and the always-funny “we cracked two fly-wheels in 24 hours and we’re 3000 miles from home with no money” joke.
Livin’ the Dream.
So, they did what anyone in that position would do. They pawned their guitars and watched a lot of “Oprah.” And like everyone else, they found inspiration in her words. So they got their guitars out of hock and got back in line to do it all over again. (While you’re searching for quotes, don’t forget to look up the one about “the definition of insanity.”) And so now it is 2009 and there is once again reason for hope. Not because of a chart position or a record deal. Not because of more empty promises from a broken industry. But because, simply, they have created a great collection of songs that combine huge hooks with f**k-you attitude, and in so doing they have reminded themselves, their fans and those around them that, like most musicians, they can’t quit doing this, and they do it better than most. So without a record deal, without airplay, they do it again, and they do it pretty f**kin’ well. Just ask Oprah.
