About me:
MAEP is the Military Alternatives Education Project. MAEP tables in city high schools and works with student groups to counter the efforts of military recruiters and to foster social change and justice.
Recruiters don't just stop by talking to you during lunch -through the "No Child Left Behind" act, high schools are required to hand over student information to military recruiters. Recruiters use this information to send mail and call you at home, sometimes every day. There have been many cases of recruiters harassing students continually both in school and at home.
?
OPT OUT
You can stop the military from getting your information from your school by filling out an OPT OUT FORM. The No Child Left behind Act provides students the opportunity of "opting out" though many students, parents and teachers are not aware of this.
DOWNLOAD AN OPT OUT FORM HERE!
Recruiters target city schools where they hope to convince young people of color, or low-income students to sign their lives over for war.
Truth is, the recruiters can tell you anything they want and most of the time are feeding lies to students.
Truth is, most people who sign up don't get anywhere close to the money recruiters promise for college and many don't get any at all.
Truth is, the government spends over $400 billion on the military while people are living hard on the streets and city schools aren't getting what they need.
Truth is, troops are being sent overseas to kill for the profit of rich politicians and CEO's.
Here are some things to keep in mind if a recruiter tries to get you to sign up:
Joining the military means your basic rights are not protected
Military "job-training" won't help you later on
In order to get any money for college, you've got to pay first - and most people still don't get any!
Racism, sexism and classism are frequent in the military - from positions of power to prison inmates.
Women often face harassment, and are often limited in the jobs which they are allowed to do - even if they have the same title as men
It is very difficult to get out of anything you sign up for, and recruiters will often trick people who try to get out - you might not be able to change your mind later on!
Questions to ask yourself:
Are you prepared to fight in any war, any place, anytime that the government orders you to?
Have you really considered and checked out all the job training and placement possibilities in your community?
Is joining the military something you want to do, or are you being pressured into if by other people?
Is this a spur of the moment decision you may regret later?
Have you talked to any of the many veterans who didn't like the military? Why didn't they make the military a career?
If you become unhappy after you enlist, do you know how hard it will be to get out?
If you get a less-than-honorable discharge, do you know how hard it will be to get it changed?
What you can do:
Fill out an opt-out form to stop the school from giving your information to recruiters
Educate yourself and others - talk to your friends, classmates and teachers.
Find other people who want the recruiters out of our schools - start a student group, table with information to get the truth out, make announcements in your school, organize events, find teachers who feel the same way, start a discussion in social studies or PIG class.
Talk to your parents and other people in your neighborhood - let them know what the recruiters are doing and what you are doing.
Find other ways to get money for college or help filling out paper work, find out what other options there are for work and job training, get involved in your community
And it doesn't just stop with the military! Prisons, police, schools, poverty, unemployment, pollution - all of these are linked in the oppression of people of color, low-income communities, women and other groups that have been oppressed throughout history.

DANKON PRO LA ALDONO! (thanks for the add! (in esperanto)) great site. let us create a network of social change for social justice across the corporate-owned myspace universe and connect in real time and real life in the struggle on the streets.
Thanks for adding me. ¶ Our many problems have a common root: Bullies, liars, thieves, and murderers — particularly those in public office — believe people are motivated only by greed and fear. They want us to share that belief, because they use it to justify themselves and to manipulate us. But you and I have found something better inside ourselves and our friends. It's in everyone, if we can just wake them — we're all one flesh and blood. Spread the word. The outcome to the ideological struggle is not yet determined, so no one can afford to be a spectator. ¶ The Iraq war, like most wars, was based on lies. And now the occupation is making new enemies faster than it can kill them; that's helpful only to arms dealers. The economy is all wrong too: the rich get richer and fewer, everyone else gets screwed, and the ecosystem gets trashed. These problems are not new, but lately they've become so blatant that we've begun to understand them. It's time to end the military-industrial complex and the corporatocracy. We the people must control government, and government must control business, not the other way around. A good start would be transparency in government, public financing of election campaigns, trustbusting the media, and ending corporate personhood. ¶ Question authority. Carry on the struggle. Hold onto hope. Keep singing. Hand in hand, we can heal the world. — Love, Eric
