   About Mae Robertson
Myspace Layouts

“Her dusky alto vocal range is a true treat, and she has an understated yet memorable way with a lyric that renders anything she performs worth investigating.”
--Larry Flick - Billboard Magazine

“Mae Robertson is one of the finest interpreters I’ve heard in years.”
--Rich Warren, Host of The Midnight Special
WFMT, Chicago, IL

“Robertson’s vocals are soft as velvet.”
-- Child Magazine

“Mae Robertson’s pure spun-gold vocals and intimate, conversational stylings are just right.”
-- Los Angeles Times

“Mae Robertson’s singing voice is sheerly beautiful. The songs shine through it. And as a writer, Robertson’s songs shimmer along side ones by Cheryl Wheeler, John Gorka and Tom Paxton.”
-- Marilyn Rae Bayer, Musical Director
WUMB Radio, Boston, MA

Not so long ago, Mae Robertson was the owner of three children's stores in the Northeast, and a new mother, when a friend overheard her singing the traditional folk song "The Water Is Wide" as a lullaby to her baby. He convinced her to record a suite of traditional and contemporary songs as lullabies and a new career was born.

Now, with four award-winning albums in her Lullaby & Lovesong Collection: All Through The Night, The Sun Upon The Lake Is Low, Sweet Dreams of Home, and the newly released Dream, Mae has built a loyal audience of listeners, both young and old. She has also garnered some remarkable reviews: "Her vocals are pure, spun gold," raved the Los Angeles Times. And the CDs have been named Notable Recordings for Children by The American Library Association; and have also won awards from Parent’s Choice, North American Parenting Publications and The Oppenheim Toy Portfolio.

Growing up in Alabama, Mae was influenced by the folk collections of her older brothers and sister. Later, she gravitated toward singer-songwriters because, like traditional folk music, their songs were lyric-driven. "I have always been drawn to the poetry and the story in songs,” she says.

In 1995, Mae founded, and remains the president of, Lyric Partners, a music label dedicated to the idea that music for children need not teach, preach, or condescend. “I’m a song collector by nature,” says Robertson “and I especially respond to sweet songs that soothe and inspire. I love expanding the lullaby genre and making music for families that will delight both parent and child.”

In 2000, Mae and her family moved back to Birmingham, Alabama after 20 years in and around New York City. That same year she recorded Stone by Stone, her first album targeting a grown-up audience, which included her own compositions as well as the work of other songwriters. “I was working on a new album when the attacks of September 11 occurred. For a few months, I didn’t listen to music. I didn’t even sing. As I slowly returned to music, I instinctively began to sing songs that I felt would help me grieve or help me heal.” These songs became the centerpiece of her album Smile, recorded in the spring of 2002.

In 2004, Mae recorded December Sky. It features seasonal songs of winter and the holidays from an assortment of genres -- traditional, spiritual, and contemporary -- presented in acoustic settings to reveal the simple yet timeless beauties within.

Mae’s love for the singer-songwriter genre, coupled with a desire to bring more great music to Birmingham, inspired her to create "The Troubadour Series"-- concerts featuring a slate of nationally touring acoustic artists. This very popular series made a significant contribution to the Birmingham music scene.

Over the past decade, on top of a busy performing and recording schedule, Mae has become a much-sought-after teacher, leading workshops in Independent Marketing, Managing Stage Fright, and Performance for The Swannanoa Gathering, SummerSongs, and The NE Regional Folk Alliance. Additionally, she has expanded the offerings of the Lyric Partners label by adding a new artist to its roster: Tony® nominated Broadway star Euan Morton.

Whether she's singing sweet lullabies for children or creating sophisticated sounds for adults, Mae Robertson's personal vision is the mortar in her artistry. “Sharing music with an audience is as wonderful and rewarding as anything I can imagine. My hope is that listeners will connect with the truth of the lyrics and the beauty in the melodies.” "

hey there, Mae Robertson!

well, it has been a long and winding road, and an even longer time coming, but my debut CD, I Remember, is FINALLY HERE!!! YAY!!!!!

to celebrate, American HeartBeat Records(tm) has arranged a FREE DOWNLOAD of Now Is The Time in exchange for a valid email address. Now Is The Time is a brand new, upbeat song I wrote: we are living in turbulent times. suddenly it is okay to be greedy and heartless? no way! a song of hope for our future, a new vision of America and the world.

we have a bunch of exciting things planned to kick this whole thing off, and we need to get a better picture of who our friends are, so the FREE DOWNLOAD form will ask you a few questions, like, what is your country and nearest major city. it all takes maybe 15 seconds.

anyhoo, the FREE DOWNLOAD, and the FUN, begins at www.JAETCHISON.com

I look forward to getting to know you a little better, and I thank you SO VERY MUCH for your friendship and support!

please tell your friends about JAETCHISON.com, and ask them to sign up for the email list, too! FUN things are coming up!!

peace from Atlanta, Georgia, USA,

J.A. Etchison

Hi my friend Mae,
hope everything's alright and your projects are working out.

I'm asking you for your support. My song Light on the horizon is one of the finalists of an important german songwritercontest of Rollingstone and aspirin.
You can listen to the song and vote for it on my myspace site or directly on

http://www.aspirin.de/html/brand/songContest.html?song7

But of course only if you like the song but I hope you'll do. If there are any problems with the german language then take a look at my blog.

Thank you for your support … for the sake of the song.

All the best from Germany for you and all your friends
Your friend Klaus

Hi, Mae,
Were you at Swannanoa this summer? I've missed seeing all the gang there.

I've been in New Mexico, seeing life in the West--so very different from the Midwest and the South.

Take care, dear lady.

You feel so close when I hear you sing...
it's comforting. :)
**I tried to contact Will, but he must not
want to be "my friend." Hahahaha!
Definitely get me the badge.....I will relieve
Webb of his duties (Hahaha) and meet you
in the city. Haven't been back to the Javitz
since I closed. :( It may give me the incentive
to re-open....? Not Eastchester, but maybe
Bronxville.... Am I crazy???? (I do love it though)
I gotta get out of this house!!!! My creative
juices are slowly dying.....I need a new project!
(And soon)

Lots of love and BIG hugs to all!

See ya on the 4th!!!!

I'm laughing as I remember you telling
me to "read Will a book and sing him a
lullaby"at bedtime. (He was 2!) When I
got to...."singing the lullaby" he wanted
nothing to do with me. Could I blame
him? Not! He was used to listening to his
mother's angelic voice.
What a smart babe!!!!

Hi Mae, thanks a lot for the friendship. Great to be added to such a wonderful singer and songwriter with such a wonderful voice. There's great music on your page, my favourite is "Little sparrow". In some ways we got the same roots. Maybe you got the time to listen to some of my songs. For example “Freedom fighter” which won the international songwriter contest “Comprosers" (Los Angeles/Maastricht 2008). Think you like it. Hope to see you some day in Germany or maybe in Alabama... who knows??? All the best for you and all your friends ... Shiregreen from Germany
